Amazing Beater spotted this am.

A 50-ish guy with a ponytail, in full 80's regalia. Pink helmet, pink puffy jacket. Bike was a 70's 5 speed (!) yellow Columbia road bike. Bars were turned upside down, of course. Fully rusted chain, gears & brakes. What looked like the original tires were almost flat and ragged to the extreme. It looked like that bike had been ridden every day, for about 30 years.

I really wanted to tell him to get new tires, but I was just staring, open-mouthed.

Anyway, it was working for him...

Cool...I'd love to get my hands on a 70's Ross Polo Bike w/ coaster brakes. I used to be able to pop wheelies on that thing w/ ease.

LOL!
OMG! You have my odd sight beat hands down.

Mine:
6 foot + in height
Old mountain bike significantly too small for her.
No helmet (not that that matters. More for illustration of the massive blonde hair swirling around her head)
Cigarette
The seat was jacked way up and the handlebars way down. She looked like she was attempting an imitation rode bike posture with a mountain bike. Plus, it seemed very uncomfortable.

Not that big of an oddity. More like it amused me for a few seconds.

Mullet
child-molester moustache
legs skinnier than my arms
tight black acid-wash jeans
80's thrashed leather jeacket
grey Supercycle 10-speed
fully rotated bars
mirrored sunglasses [Superfuzz]
cigarette dangling from the corner of the mouth
white sneakers

I see one of these ^^^^ a couple of times each year. It could be summer or winter, it's always the same setup.

50-60 years old
giant beard tangled in dreadlocks
hair probably the same
totally bookin it on a roadie

what is up with the tipped up bumbike handlebars... ppl riding around holding on to the brake handles. terrifying. we have lots of these guys/gals around campbell cause there's easy camping spots along the MUP. i get the notion to set up a repair stand in the park and hand out blinkies, flip the bars and chop em to bullhorns, adjust the seat height, etc. plus toss in some subtle reminders about DONT RIDE INTO TRAFFIC.

All this talk of bum-bikes reminds me of sight on my commute home one day this past summer.

I'm cruising through a less-than-desirable area of the nearby city where I work and commute to. Approaching from the other direction is some dude on your average 10-speed bum-bike. Some sorta 10-speed beater, upturned handlebars, etc. Guy is in ratty jeans, t-shirt, meshback hat with scraggly, long, hair (may have been a mullet, couldn't tell for sure) coming out the back, and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

So far nothing unusual, this is San Bernardino after all. I give him the same courteous nod I give to anyone I encounter on a bike, and about that time the guy pulls a wheelie, rides it for a bit, and then takes *both* hands off the bars and rides that for a few more pedal strokes before grabbing the bars again and dropping the front wheel.

Don't see that every day.

Dude. You and I have the same hero. I see this guy all the time flying on a decent road bike with clipless and all. The dude lives somewhere around me (Gage park area). I see him once in a while going the other way on the Pier Four/Cootes paradise path. Did you ever see this guy in the summer? The guy is 50-60 and he is super fit. I'd like to ride the with guy, I'm sure it would be a hammer fest.

I see guys like this and it makes me glad to know that I can be that guy in 30 years(God willing).

30-40 year old mechanic, complete with shop jacket
Maroon colored girls bike ( his kness were pumping up near his chest)
His white MacGregor sneakers were worn so bad that the socks were exspose

sbhikes 11-11-05 08:10 PM

Stop it you guys. I swear all of you are spotting my ex-husband.

And why the disdain for up-turned handlebars. That's the best way. When I was a teenager and mullets were cool, everybody had them that way.

This 80 year old man. Goes by the name of Orville, never owned a car. Closest small town is10 k , large one 20 k He rode an old bike for years. Showed me his new bike this year first one he ever bought, He kept all the vendors tags on the bike for months.

Saw this bum bike a few Summers ago: old 10 speed with fully rotated bars, the 27 inch wheels had been replaced with a 26" set of mountain bike wheels with full knobbies. This created a brake reach problem that was ingeniously solved by removing the pads so the bare aluminum calipers could clamp down on the rubber sidewalls of the tires. Seemed to stop ok at the low speeds the guy rode.

There's a couple in the Twin Cities that are humorous. There's a guy here on an old ten speed and instead of turning the bars upside down he's added a set of sit up and beg bars. The strangest set up I've ever seen. The other is this guy that has a boom box attached to his drops, he has the radio turned up full blast. I believe he's riding a Cannondale with fenders, wearing jeans and a sweat shirt and just hammers. Saw him every weekend on the Greenway, he looks like not much would bother him, life is pretty satisfying. It also looks like his 70 year old mom gets tired of him in the basement and sends him on a ride.

60ish yo man, Schwinn Dept. store MTB, with what looked like a plastic bread rack somehow secured to the back, and a wire basket on the front. The guy rides around picking up cans and taking them to the recycler to sell. Must admit he probablt gets more miles in that alot of roadies! Kind of a sight, but in a way I admire the guy!

vrkelley 11-13-05 09:32 AM

60year old waist-long ponytail...Grey-Beard on a wide-tire, too small bike...passes me like I'm standing still. I wonder who Grey-Beard is?

huhenio 11-13-05 09:41 AM

20 something year old guy in 80's mountain bike. He looks distressed; wearing greasy black jeans, some heavy metal band sweat shirt and greasy baseball hat. Looks like he has run out of luck, job, licence, etc. I've seen him going to the wholesale beer and soda store on his bike. I feel bad for that guy, he seems to wish he had a car judging for his lack of traffic-riding skills. Repeatedly riding on sidewalks instead of - illegaly - splitting lanes in rush hour.
