mounting lock vs carrying lock?

I have a Bulldog Mini and I'd like to know the benefits, if any, that carrying a bike lock on one's person or in a bag has over mounting it to the frame during a 30 minute or so city commute. I have to say that I'm not particularly interested in aesthetic benefits, but rather in functional ones. Thanks (again) in advance!

It doesn't rattle or destroy your paint.

Functional? It's easier to bunnyhop with the lock in your backpack. If you ride errands, you can leave the lock in 2 pieces, key in it, so locking is faster.

The best place for a lock is strapped to the top of the rear luggage rack using an elastic bunji chord. It slips in and out quickly and is totally secure. You can also get immediate access to a lump of metal to fend off pesky muggers.

I strap my u-lock on top of the rear rack, but under the rack bag. The velcro straps that hold down the bag also hold the U-lock very securely. It's not accessible for whacking stuff with, though.
