Kona Jake Series - Max Tire Size?
 

Just curious what is the biggest size tire anyone has put on a Jake, Jake the Snake, or Major Jake. I have 700x30 right now and they don't have enough volume for the rooty singletrack I ride. The biggest my LBS stocks is 700x35 and they don't have any 29" tires so I don't have much to experiment with. Anyone running a 29" tire or anything larger than a 700x35?

Jake, there are plenty of riders in Calgary. Some even on this forum. Where are their answers? Have a builder widen the frame, front and rear, lace two rims together, and run TWO tires each front and rear. I had a buddy in LA do it. He could ride in dry sand. About 5.5 inches wide. Some 13.97 cm for you canucks, Eh?

My jts came with 35's. I run with 28's commuting so the 35's are not installed at the moment to tell you how much room is left. Sorry

I run Vittoria Randonneur 700x35s as my standard commuter tyre and there is about a centimetre of chainstay clearance each side. I have an '05 Jake.

I have tried Michelin Transworld City tyres in 700x47!!! They were a very tight fit with less than 3 milimetres beneath the fork steerer and a couple of mm chainstay clearance so would rub on the stays when out of the saddle.

So you will be OK running 700x40 or 42. Transworld Sprint semi slicks come in that size and are inexpensive so are a good chunky tread tyre to experiment with. I run the 700x35 version on my weekend wheels and they have better clearance than the vittoria 'slicks'. I intend to order the 700x40c size when they are done with.

In dry conditions or on the road I think that you may be able to run up to 700x45. Tyre sizing is an area of hyperbole and outright lies. Most manufacturers tend to exaggerate the size.

I would really like to know how WTB Mutano Raptor comps in 700x44 fit.

I have run nokians with studs (700x35 or 37) & freddy fenders on my JTS. The rubber strings off the end would touch the fender, and fitting the fender took a while, but it worked fine. Without the fenders I've tried 700-38s and they were fine too.

I'd love to throw a pair of 38's on my 2014 Jake. Anyone running these or anything close?

Cyclocross bikes have knobby 35's, plus some clearance above that for mud. So you're probably going to run out of width between the chainstays before you run out of height. Slick 38's are probably OK, 42's are probably pushing it.

I've had my ol' Jake hanging for a few years, afraid to subject the poor bike to my current weight... I've put about 40,000 miles on it, though, between club rides, centuries/events, and everyday commuting for a few years. No apparent frame issues after all that, and I was a big fan of the bunny-hop when I was fit.

Maybe, if/when I can shuck a few pounds, a set of 40 or so tires might make Jake a fun park trail mount.

I have a 58cm 2006 Kona Jake the Snake. Today I mounted Panaracer GravelKing SK 700c x 40mm tires and they fit great with room to spare. I agree that you could probably fit 48mm wide tires. It rides beautifully with 40mm tires. Dang this bike is nice!

Just a couple guys still enjoying the Kona Jake. Who cares how old the thread is, bike is still cool and being used.
Now give me some good recommendations for a cheap commuter wheelset that I can put some wider tires on.
