Check this out! I wonder how practical it will be?

Cool idea, but I would have more confidence in it if it had some kind of battery backup. Of course, that might defeat the purpose of such a light.

It's been done before, it's not new.

That light obviously has an internal battery that is charged by the solar cell during the day time. I'm guessing the vibration is not enough to power the light by itself so the solar cell is used to charge it up when its idle.

I wonder if it will be helmet-mountable. Nifty little light but hardly a main light IMO -- best as a blinkie, no doubt. It's like the Citizen "Eco-Drive" watches (don't have one, but saw an ad yesterday) which are powered in the same ways.

Right the solar light has been done. This is a motion light:
"It's powered by vibration, with the help of a photovoltaic solar panel."
Like those lights you shake and then you can use them for few minutes. Or backpacks that collect hikers energy (not the solar ones)
I wonder how much energy can they gain like that??? I know I'll have to try one out just for the techonolgy effect...

You can, of course, convert any mechanical motion into electricity. But the most efficient way to do it is if you start with circular motion. Not surprisingly, that's been done. It's called a hub generator.
I guess there's something to be said for capturing waste vibration; it might work well for me on my 4 miles of gravel road, but not for most people. There just isn't that much vibration on pavement.
