Emergency Bike Roadside Service?

Just found out about the "better world club" -- sort of a crunchy lefty AAA.

They actually offer bike roadside assistance. I'm intrigued . . . anyone heard of/been rescued by these folks?

Thanks

That does sound like an interesting service, but since the only service is 30 miles of "towing" per year, I wonder if a person would be better off to just carry the $40 per year plus save the application fees with them to pay for a cab instead. Although having someone else search for the transportation would be nice... a single number to call.

It is interesting the way their auto plans are structured and marketed...

for you and your bicycle up to 30 miles annually with a maximum of two service calls per covered member, per year.
ah... I ride that in about a day, and that costs $40?? Yeah I'd just get a cab.

Nope, but I don't think this would be a very handy service. With few exceptions, having a bike break down is not like having a car break down because odds are overwhelming that you can fix the problem yourself long before help arrives.

When that is not a case, a cab or ambulance would probably serve you better.

Worst comes to worst, I walk to a bus stop. Keeping a few bucks on hand for a ride is much cheaper than the fee they mention.

If you have a breakdown with a bike, you are much more likely to have another cyclist stop and help you. Whenever I pass somebody who appears to have bike trouble I ask if I can help. Most of the breakdowns are self fixable.

Looks like you als get in on the "bikes fly free" program, and also a subscription to Bicyling magazine. If you already use these two, this is a pretty good deal.

What do they tow you with, an old person trike?

Cell phone and a visa card will get you any where in Philly

How about rides in Rockland/Bergen? Can you get a cab from Rte 9W back to 120th Street? (serious question!)

monsterkidz 12-15-05 04:11 PM

I snapped a chain on 9W this year heading south back towards the city. Three cyclists stopped and asked if I was OK, but none had a chain tool. Without the chain tool, I had to call family members that live in Orangeburg, NY to come pick me up in their truck and drive me to the nearest bike shop. So I lucked out that time and dodged the bullet of walking for miles in my cycling shoes. That is the only time I felt completely stranded. Everything else that has gone wrong on a ride has never left me pushing the bike home. Knock on wood.
