How do you look from behind?

You know what I mean. Your profile and visibilty in the daytime. Assuming most riders wear black shorts or tights-pants your largest area and most visible "signature" is your back. I prefer a camelback backpack but I'm thinking it cuts down on the exposed area of hi vis colors making you even less noticed from behind. I also see very few yellow helmets for sale and even fewer bright colored frames. How are you hard core commuters staying noticed in the daytime. Could orange be better than hi vis yellow, the Coast Guard thinks so.

I don't worry so much about my actual clothes as I always wear one of those cycling vests. I think you can throw it over your camel back as well.

I have a very bright LED blinker light for early morning commutes and I choose jerseys that are yellow or some other bright color. Trouble is that it's cool here now and I frequently cover up the jersey with a windproof vest so I'm all dressed in black/dark blue from head to toe. Oh well, the lighting helps. When it warms up it will be back to the bright jerseys.

Keep in mind that the USCG operates in an environment that is primarily blue and grey. Orange has more contrast against those colors.

In a normal urban environment, I think Hi-Viz ANSI lime is more visible than orange.

black. All my gear is black except my white shoes and helmet. Tights, jacket, socks, skull cap, etc
Something I plan on fixing with my bonus. Going to a nice lime green jacket.

I wear a hi vis yellow jacket with some reflective piping across the back along with a hi vis yellow reflective mesh vest. I also have arm bands so my arms are seen when I am signaling and I have a blinkie on the bike and helmet.

Just curious, why do you want a Camelbak? Why not just use a regular backpack that has bright colors?

For extra visibility I have one of these tied to the back of my saddle. You can also tie it around your waist and let it hang. It's about 9"-10" across.

Neon-yellow jacket... plus dual daytime-visible superblinkies (which I do use day or night). Pedaling motion may help catch the eye of motorists too, so if you haven't ...well, on second thought, n/m

these days, I wear a red jacket with my red and black messenger that has white reflective tape on it in a pattern like >=P with some white dashes going across my bag width wise. does that make sense?? Really, it's the daytime... I don't stress as much about visibility during day than I do at night :B that makes me think of getting more jackets within the red to yellow spectrum.

That reminds me: I had a windbreaker jacket that has a broken zipper. I asked my gf to fix it about 8 months ago, and she agreed to do it. I'm still waiting. Along with my blue and white track jacket (about a year and 3 months now). And my paperboy cap (was supposed to be my birthday present, then got moved over to xmas, and now... well :B). wtf.

I seriously want summer to come back, so I can go back to wearing wifebeaters and shorts on my commutes.

My neighbor across the street pulled up just as I got home from my commute from work. He said that from behind I was "pretty lit up" and that "if anyone hit from behind, it would be because they wanted to."

Being a year-round commuter in a variable climate, my dress varies greatly throughout the year. What I'm wearing now is my standard winter wear, which includes more reflective stuff, since I'm riding in the dark regularly. In the summer, when I hardly ever ride in the dark, I tend to not think about visibility at all.

I have a backpack that is dark blue, so short of getting rid of that, which I don't feel like doing, I have to work around it. Last fall I finally got a hi-vis yellow jacket to wear throughout the winter, with arms since most of my back is obscured by the pack. I still don't worry about the pants - I just wear whatever slacks I'm wearing for the office that day, which could be light or dark. I do wear reflective pants clips though. (In the summer daylight I sometimes revert to rubber bands, since they're easy to aquire.) I've got some white reflective tape on my frame and fenders, a square of it on my boots (my standard winter footgear) and reflective sidewall tires. I've tried putting reflective tape strips on my backpack, but it doesn't stick well. One of these days I'm going to buy an extra set of reflective clips and sew them to the backpack. I also still have the standard red reflector on the seat post that came with the bike, and the white ones in the wheel spokes.

I don't generally turn on any of my lights in the daytime, except sometimes when it's very foggy.

Generally I ride with hi viz lime vest, shirt or jacket (okay, the jacket is actually yellow). Except when there is alot of snow (not necessarily on the road) where I switch to hi viz orange vest. I just think the orange shows up better in a white snow background.

Bikes: A few.

The trifecta of being visible:
Bright colors. LOTS of reflective bits. Multiple Hi-power blinkies.
I'm really, really, really, bright. I've never seen another commuter on the road with more crap going.

I just upped the ante with a bunch of stuff from Indenti-Tape.com. They sell the same stuff AlertShirts irons on to theirs and a bunch more. My latest bit: On the front/rear parts of the crank arms I have red and white reflective tape to create a wig-wag flash pattern when pedalling. Every little bit helps.

For my commutes to and from work, I'm lit like a randonneur, including a cycling reflective vest (the kind with the extended tail) and reflective strips around each ankle.

Holy crap! I hope y'all don't congregate, or anyone within a 5 km radius will go deaf and blind from all the loud outfits.

After dark, it's a single blinker and whatever refective piping is on my helmet, jacket and backpack. In the daytime, reflectors and lights do jacques squat, so I just ride a straight line and keep me ears and eyes open...

Hi-Viz yellow/green is actually physically easier for human eyes to see due its color wave length. Nuff said.

A very good way to be seen in the daytime has been missed. Ride where you are supposed to be and act predictably. I would link to the League of American Bicyclists safety section if I knew how. Consider taking one of their effective cycling courses. I have never been hit at night due largely to very powerful headlights and Xenon flash strobes. Hit 3 times in the day; side and front, never from the rear.

A study I heard of years ago found that while alert and watchful test subjects could see Hi-Viz Yellow best they (male and female) REACTED best to Hot Pink. Go figure.

I'm usually seen hogging the entire right lane, unless theres a large lane that cars can pass safely by. However if they make a point of passing me too close even with the room that they have, I take up more of the right lane enough to prompt them to swich lanes to pass me.

As for how I look, well I Usually wear this:

i have a large, rectangular, dorky, satchel-style bag that i wear across my back like a messenger bag. not cycling-specific but i bought it for its colour, which is a really uncalled-for shade of lurid yellow, . then just to be sure i added strips of inch-wide reflective tape all over the out-facing surface of it. my bog-standard biking jacket is one of those mec cyclist shells, also yellow. visible, but i'm starting to feel a bit trapped inside the Yellow Zone. i feel like big bird some days.
