Manhattan bike messenger video

Download the top (Feb 2004) video of NYC bike messengers blasting around with a webcam on the helmet. Almost better than Hollywood.

Remember the Bicycling Magazine article of a few years ago about the Manhattan bike messenger who rode with only one leg, and carried crutches so he could get up building stairs? Quite a story!

These have been posted a bunch of times in SS/FG, here and elsewhere on BF. But it's always fun to watch cuz not everyone's seen them yet. Notice most of them don't wear helmets and don't stop pedaling.

I think its complete nuts and looks like a ton of fun though. I'd love to ride in New York just for the experience but know if I'd have the stones to go fullspeed like these guys.

I wonder how many of those guys are still alive.

I about died from heart failure about 20 times just sitting here watching the video!

I can see why Law and Order did an episode where someone finally stabbed a habitually offensive messenser. On the other hand, it looks fun and makes me want to go ride in traffic. My wife doesn't get it that I love to ride in traffic so much. The problem with meridian/boise is that the cars are only stuck for 1/4 mile or so at the lights and then they have a 45-50 mph mile to catch you and seek revenge. So I have to mind my manners as they will probably catch me on certain roads. Not that I would do anything besides ride fast between cars anyway.

I saw that episode. Man I love Law and Order. I think riding in traffic is fun too if all the people driving are being resonable as well. But like you I could never cut between cars at a light as they would catch me no problem as soon as the light turns green.

Riding in traffic is so much more enjoyable when they think your a cop. One guy told me only cops ride blue bikes with a bag on the back rack.
I have bearded guys in pickup trucks giving me the right of way making a left turn. Most of all though, the majority of vehicles slow down when they pass me and give me plenty of room.

I never planned to look like a bike cop, but I also make it a point to keep this look.

If you want to look like a cop, on a bike around here, you need a black Trek mountain bike (with knobbies, no less!), black shorts, black helmet, and black collared shirt. A swiss army knife holster, flashlight, and notepad hanging on your belt helps too.

that video was pretty damn cool, but some of us N.Y.er's aren't that crazy, I for one. It found it amusing once the guns n rose's song "welcome to the jungle" kicked in.

These guys know the in's and out's of bikin in the city, Im sure they're well seasoned riders, with a hell of alot of experience, despite the fact it looks reckless, it's really just skill.

Skill, mostly. These guys ride 50 miles every day in that traffic. The ones who survive the first few years on the job learn to foresee what will happen in traffic, and where the 2 feet of space they need will open up.

Hell, most of the time, messengers know when a car door will open. One of them posted a list of the signs: person leaning away from the door to grab the handle, kissing the driver goodbye, a quick glance back that of course fails to register the oncoming biker, the click of the lock... They even watch the mirror to see what the people in stopped cars are up to! I never find the time to look that close...
