Talk about mudflaps...

...my bike's got em'.

$.50 multicolor-striped Ikea placemat* + scissors, and X-acto knife, some reflective tape and some drilling = some pretty stylin' mudflaps. I'll try to get some pics posted somewhere.

The placemat was big enough to do two pair, so my girlfriend's bike will have some too as soon as we can get some hardware. I decided to get stainless steel nuts and allen bolts and do nylon washers on each side, but there are much cheaper ways to go for sure.

The best part is they seem to have held off the rain for my ride home.

*Fred Meyer had Spongebob and Care Bears placemats, but it's not quite my style.

here's a picture of them I took today in sunny seattle...

Milk jugs are for milk; mudflaps are for real/serious/true bikes (i.e. the kind of bikes I use) ;)

I've been using the plain mudflap for over 6 years on this bike. I found it on the street in Heidelberg, GE.

The feminine mystique mudflap was bought for about $8/pair at my LBS about 2 years ago. No fuss, no muss, no extra hardware needed for the exquisite look of fine machinery combined with high culture on my current daily commuter.

Yep, we both understand that mud flaps with the artistic touch are much better for flapping mud.

Which is better, and inside or outside mud flap connection to the fender?

I-Like-To-Bike, what... no photos on Snake Alley? Come on, some one's got to show those Lombard-Schmombard San Franciscans who is boss. Okay, maybe it's in Muscatine. No, I'm sure it is in Burlington.

Turn 'em up to 11 now...

Big bottom,
Big bottom,
Talk about mud flaps,
My gal's got 'em.
Big bottom,
Drive me out of my mind.
How can I leave this behind?

Couldn't help myself...

I prefer to have the mudflap inside:
– Whatever water trickles between mudflap and fender goes down on the mudflap, so the fender remains clean.
– The fender "rounds" the mudflap and adds some rigidity.
– As I do mine with stairtread, the fender looks nicer than the mudflap.

Of course I prefer relaxed comfortable non competitive flat land riding like found near my former home:

I've made a couple of mudflaps this winter out of discarded inner tubes. The solid rubber solution are better, but I had these at hand and was impatient (the weather waits for no shopping trip! :) )

I-Like-To-Bike, thanks for the photos. When I was there years ago there was only one other person. I never imagined so many people on that street. I have to use Google Earth to see which is more crooked.

One more Snake Alley picture for unkchunk. And no, I don't tackle the Snake with the bike in the foreground. It is good for getting me to and from the beer tent.
