freeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

i have no job, la la la la . . .

:D contract ended at about 8pm yesterday. maudit, that feels good. been working too freaking hard this past final week to make room for the bike, but in celebration, i fully i meant to get up at a civilised hour this morning and go ride the alternate route to the Place Of Horror. just to see what it's like, since i was always under too much of a gun to do any experimenting. and then, since there's recruiters breathing on me since last wednesday, get out my transit system's map of all the bike routes in this city, and try them all out, just for the fun of it and to window-shop which job locations i might want to bike to instead. but not today. today i just have far too much sitting around in my pjs doing sfa to even think about squeezing it in.

ooo, but there's one happy puppy in this corner here.

I take 42 in euro sizing. So, what exactly was this hell job? I keep thinking about consulting, but I have no skill...

huhenio 01-18-06 10:40 PM

47 euro for me

heh. it was software qa. there wasn't anything wrong with the place, except that it just wasn't my kind of place. they were all too evolved and mellow for me, i guess. i can be evolved and mellow at home, but if i'm going to put on street clothes and schlep myself out to some place with a lunchroom, i kind of want a few dragons to slay to make it worthwhile.

mrkott3r 01-19-06 05:52 AM

what you were working for google? ;)

oboeguy 01-19-06 08:12 AM

LOL, I too, am, ahhh, "free" these days. I'm back to "full time doctoral student", to be precise, which means I'm not free at all. ;)

lol. i actually almost even thought i could live in the land of dubya for the sake of google a while ago. not that they asked me or anything :p they looked like the kind of wrangy free-range place where i could do a LOT of damage.

i know how you feel, oboeguy. so-called freedom, and how did i spend it today? drudgery, that's how. updating the resume into even greater pomposity, wondering what i did with the interview clothes, trying to think of sensible answers to Just Exactly When ARE You Available Then. . . i'm half resentful, half afraid they're going to detect i have no work ethic at all.

but. heh. someone mentioned a job to me yesterday, and i'm not finding myself able to think too clearly about the actual job. i'm thinking 'that sounds like it might be kind of a nice bike ride . . . '

Congratz! Try not to buckle to the almighty buck. Although every man has his limit as to how much money it takes to change your mind.

Funny thing how the place you commute to comes in second to the actual commute. I'll betcha cagers don't look at it the same way. :D

i hope the end of this angsty gig won't mean the end of your freeform bloggy-type posts here. i don't usually comment but i do read and enjoy.

Well you know, the company has a pretty substantial non-US presence... http://www.google.com/intl/en/jobs/international.html

If you can hack it. ;)

i did in a way, even when i was driving to places. 'how much car time' has always been a primary factor for me. i probably never would have got on my bike if i'd been down with the whole north american comfort-with-cars outlook. for me it was never really biking in its own right, more like i came across bikes in the process of hunting for any viable escape from the car.

this is a first for me in a way: it'll be the first time i've ever approached any job with the intention of biking to it, if at all possible. up until now i've always taken the job and then started trying to think the bike into the picture a few weeks later. but i still can't say that it's the first consideration. i'd never take another job i can't stand just on the premise that a good bike ride will keep me sane. clearly it won't.
