27" commuter/beater rebuild
I asked you guys a few weeks ago for advice if I should rebuild a 27'' bike. I did it and I thought you guys might wanna know how it went, I finally got it done today (with a bit of help from expat :D ) and here are some pics:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/7852/bike0023xa.th.jpg http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/592...size9vr.th.jpg http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/9426/bike0056mx.th.jpg The final fit and tightening of the gear levers, wont be until tomorrow, the front brakes arent hooked up yet, I need to find a part for it. Ive taken it for a ride and its a lot smoother and a tad faster. I went back to the old school levers (no clicks) because I like them, I had em lying around, and I find it really easy to find the gears with them. Im a bit disappointed with the paint job. I shoulda done some more research on how to spray paint effectively. As I have already put a few scratches on the bike. It took me 8 hours to sand it back. Aaaargghh. Overall Im happy with it, it will be a good commuter/beater bike. Since most people over hear ride mtn bikes, I should be able to ride a lot faster than me. Most people wont bother stealing it because it looks kinda bad, and people will take a mtn bike over it. Does anyone know of where I can get cycling stickers online (to ship to Aus)? Or can some kind soul send me some? (please). Just to cover up a few scratches. |
Ebay is your friend for stickers, and postage is cheap. Search for "decals" as well. Get some nice Colnago ones...
Oh crap! I have some carbon-fibre look Campagnolo stickers! Ghetto rules... Cricket is boring. |

Free beer. Cold. You'll be there. :D
|
I got the front brake going. The bike actually stops! and i can do skids!
|
What a monster! You'll cut a fine figure on that dashing steed! Good job. :D
|
shweet.
|
Nice, my of centurion is stripped down right now awaiting a rebuild. I hope it comes out as nice as yours.
|
cool bananas :)
|
How like them flat bars? Particularly with that short stem? Do you ride far?
|
love the flat bars, gives me a little more ride height. The stem, that was the best stem (out of 2) I had lying round. I went for a 1 1/2 hour ride this morning with a few climbs, its very comfortable.
I ride a lot as im an uni student and i dont really like cars. I ride pretty much whereever i have to go, and i ride for the hell of it. So yeah I guess I ride far. EDIT: I forgot to add I lowered the seat this morning before I went riding, It was only that high because it was in a bike stand. |
next paint job use clearcoat to protect paint. Anyhow, looks nice, and simple. Nothing exotic, but atleast it'll be ridden, which is the only thing that matters.
|
I like the beater a lot ... nicely done
|
i follow the KISS principle
Ill probably buy a nice road bike near the end of this year to complement this one. One to commute on, one to take on rides |
I've a fine appreciation for the old 27"-wheeled road bikes. I ride a ladies bike from the 1970s that rolls on 27" wheels.
I like the shade of green you painted it. Like racing green, isn't it? Well, happy commuting! |
What size frame is that?

Measure horizontally from the center of the head tube to the center of the seat tube.

Yup, the 27s are nice. My roadie is an 80s Fuji. Says 12 speeds on the chainstay (!!!) but I only got 10. :( |
Very nice work!
I guess that it's not a 27-incher, but there's an old, sad looking Peugeot parked outside my building. Maybe I should convince the owner that they no longer want it, and embark on a similar project of my own! Yeah, it would be my third such project in the last year, so? What's it to ya, huh?? |
As one academic to another, could you please explain your statement, "I should be able to ride a lot faster than me." as I don't seem to be able to parse it in a way that makes sense.
Oh, and nice commuter. It looks like it will be fun. |

Hey im doing economics not Arts, leave me alone. It must be a typo and i cant remember what originally I was going to say. :S (we dont have a confused smiley!) The frame size (from my dodgy measuring) is 53cm |
I'd say it's closer to a 56cm, but I'm not expert. ;)
|
neither am I
|
I just noticed he said to measure the top tube. For frame size it's from the center of the BB to the center of the top tube at the seatpost. I reckon that should give you 56cm.
