... when you consider lightweight parts a negative. After you load in your laptop, change of clothes, lunch, thermos of coffee, tools, cap, varying degrees of cold weather gear, pump, tube, 3lb light battery, etc etc who would really spend extra money to save a couple grams?

I only started commuting recently, but my climbing speed on my commute is faster than my climbing speed on other rides. Yes, I'm in street clothes, I'm trying to avoid sweating so that I don't have to freshen up afterward, my commuter bike is heavier, and I'm carrying a U-lock. But it's a mere three miles, and the hill is right at the end of my commute. It's about half a mile of about 6% grade. During my commute, I often hit a red light at the bottom, so there's no momentum helping me out. I sustain about 11 MPH when commuting, about 10 MPH at tempo pace on my carbon fiber bike. I commute purely because it's fun, but since I'm out there anyway, I've also turned it into a chance to improve my hill-climbing speed.
