Cops
Yesterday afternoon was just lovely. At 70 degrees, it almost got hot! I was really enjoying my ride home when two Dekalb County motorcycle cops, riding two abreast, pulled alongside me.
"Is that thing hard to ride?" the lady cop on the right asked, grinning widely, referring to my recumbent. "Not once you get used to it," I smiled back at her. "Must be fun!" she called back. I gave them the "thumbs up" and they drove off. What does this have to do with Advocacy or Safety? It made me feel like I belonged on the road, and the other motorists who saw us might have gotten the same message. It meant something to me, since I'm not always sure all drivers realize I belong on the road with my bicycle. It was a great jesture. Thanks, DC. |
Sounds like she was hitting on you.

The few times I've been passed by cops they have always been very courteous, giving me a reasonable amount of room and passing with clear sight lines, and at a reasonable speed. No comments or waves but the kind of respect that makes me enjoy riding a bike.

Yeah, girls dig recumbents.
Seriously though I get those comments a lot from pretty much everyone. I had no idea the recumbent would make me such an object of social curiosity when I bought it. :) |

Cool. :)
I got a smile and a wave today from a Sheriff's Deputy while I was towing one of my canoes, loaded with fishing stuff, behind my Townie down 2 lane, NOL, 55 mph speed limit, Hwy 61. :) |
I saw a CHP pull over a motorbike ahead of me on the highway shoulder. The putt-putt stopped where I wouldn't be able to get past. The patrolman pulled up next to him and waved him down the road to a place where I could get by. Just making things safe for another road user, nothing special on the 101.

I was in a meeting today with another sometimes bike commuter, and she said one time she rode past a cop pointing a radar gun at traffic, so she yelled to him "Clock me!" He apparently was not amused, and just ignored her.

Last week I saw a recumbent here with a rear spoiler which looked very cool. I couldn't get my mobile out quick enough for a picture. Bummer.
