Broken Hand
 

I got me hand stepped on in my soccer game, Friday night. When the ER nurse put the fiberglass "splint" on it, I talked her into putting a slight bend in the wrist so I could still ride my bike.

The problem is that it is going to be pretty cold and wet, this week. I'll probably have to cut a slit in the sleeve of my inner layers, but I can't get a glove on, over the cast. Anyone got advice on keeping my fingers warm?

Put an old stocking cap over the hand and tape it around the wrist. Instant ghetto supersized mitten with poor tumb definition.

Thanks MacG. I tried it with the wool cap, last night. It was a bit drafty.
So, I tried a wool sock pulled over my cast, this morning.
It was worthless.
I then wrapped a scarf around my hand and then put the sock over that.
A little better, but still pretty dang chilly.

Tomorrow, I'm going to just take the whole contraption off, put a glove on and then put the splint on, over it. It's a half-cast, held on with an ace bandage, so I can take it off as needed.

Try a plastic bag over the wool. That will cut the wind. It'll look funny, but should work.

About 20 years ago I had a break like that and I wore a wool sock over the hand for the duration of the winter. It's definitely important to keep the hand warm to speed healing.

Did they set it so you can still give drivers the finger?

I just got over a broken wrist last December. I couldn't ride at all for 2 months. When I started riding again I put a rubber glove(disposable latex types) directly on my hand, then the cast, then a wool mitten(extra large). Worked well but was tough to switch gears, braking was fine.

I just have to do it with the left haand now ;) .

Why go out and ride, when you got a broken hand? Seems risky.

I still have to get to work and I sold my car in July.
In a pinch, I can still take my wife's mini-van, but most days she needs it to haul the kids around.

I tossed the cast, altogether. I made a splint out of a 1.75 x 11" aluminum slat. I bent the end around to protect the ends of my last two fingers and wrapped it with cotton. I used the same ace bandage to attach it to my hand. It keeps my hand from bending or moving, so it is doing its job, but I think the ortho might still be a little irked when he sees it ;) . I have an appointment to see him on Tuesday. We'll see what he says.

It goes on and comes off without too much fuss, so I've been able to wear my glove underneath it with no problems.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a new bike, specifically a recumbent with below the seat steering.

**UPDATE**
I saw the orthopedist today and he took X-rays of my hand. He said everything is healing properly and to just keep doing what I'm doing. I showed him the splint and he said it was as good as any splint that he could put on me.

Just another two weeks and I can take it off for good.
