I popped an innertube today. Got a new Silca Pista floor pump. Didn't realize the dial went 20 40 60 80. I was counting by tens. Had to laugh at myself. :o

That is still better than the idiotic mistake I made when I first started out.
Was pumping my 700X35 front tire up to 70 psi. For the life of me I could not figure out why it would not go over 40 or 50 psi. Then I popped the tube. Don't use a cheap car tire gauge for a bike. They only go to 40 or 50 psi. d'oh! |
I helped a lady who had inflated her daughters tire at a garage. After filling it with green Slime(tm). She did not know how fast it would inflate. Boom! She was sprayed with green goo.

I'm still trying to figure out how pista tire pump heads work. My pump has a dual schrader / pista head. I figured out how to use it in both modes. I just don't understand how it works in Pista mode. I'm guessing it just clamps on tight around the pista shaft. Once you get the pump internal pressure over the tube internal pressure, the pista valve opens?
Note: previously, I used one of those pista to schrader converters and my shop air compressor to pump up the tires of my bike with pista tubes. |
Heh. Here's another random funny fact. The Joe Blow floor pump appears to have a cylinder that's exactly 1 square inch in area. I deduced this because my son (who weighs 50 lbs) can fill the tires to 50 PSI and that's it. He was leaning on the pump handle, feet off the floor, and couldn't get it to go down any further.

Friction can be an amazingly strong force. It's all that keeps your house from falling down (nails are friction-dependent fasteners).
