The big ol' Krypto stays locked to the rack at work. For errands I carry a smaller cable lock in my backpack.

I use bungee to attach the U-lock to the top of the rear rack.

Open the lock, loop the hasp over one of the frame rails of the seat, slide both end loops of the curly cable around the hasp and close the lock.

We are talking a 15 year old bike here. I paid more for the curly cable and the lock than the bike.

I have a Kryptonite coil lock I wrap around my seatpost for quick stops. My ULock and other coil lock I leave locked to the rack at work, that way I don't have to commute carrying a lot of extra weight.

For commuting to work I leave a kryptonite lock at the bike racks, for errands and going to meet friends at a bar I'll strap the smaller lock onto the pannier rack with a bungee cord.

I don't carry (or use) a bike lock. My bike is honestly just too valuable to be left outdoors, even in a safe location. Altogether, including lights, pedals, wheels, and computer, it's probably worth $4k, and quite a bit of expensive bits are easily removable. And no, it wouldn't be reasonable to uninstall and reinstall a triple-wireless Polar computer and an HID headlight system every time I park the bike. I put the bike in my cubicle instead, where it's truly safe. If I carried a lock, I think I might be tempted to use it from time to time (outside of stores, etc.)... and I actually don't even want that temptation.

Watch out for that clip. Check the little screws that hold the two pieces of plastic together (not the same as the ones that hold the unit to the frame) from time to time. Mine came undone, after which the whole unit is wasted. I replaced the manufacturer's unit with one from kryptonite. I don't think the kryptonite one is as good as the original, and it took a long time to get to hold tight to the frame. But they seem to be the only people selling lock holders. Having the lock right there ready to go is very handy.

Ok class is back in session. On my commuter MTB rig (hardtail) I carry a full size Krypto NY lock. The clip that came with the lock is attached to the seattube just below the top tube. The lock sits just outside the triangle above the crankset (U part pointing down, lock flat against the seat tube&rt stay) and protrudes less--say to the small chainring. Putting the lock there centralizes the weight and uses space that is available and not in use by anything--fenders, lights, bottles, packs, racks, pumps,blow-up dolls, etc.
I have had no trouble with this over the winter. I have not tried this on the 'cross rig, but surmise it may work just as well. It is a very elegant solution to the dilema.

The new lock doesn't fit like this. I carry it in my pannier/messenger/backpack.

I wear my 6' cable around my waist, fits just right with two wraps, actually just above my hips. I used to always have it wrapped around the seatpost or frame somewhere but kind of got the idea the first time I went to NYC and rode around and saw the delivery guys/gals. It's a lot quicker and easier for me. I don't notice it once I have it on either. Doesn't work too well with a self-coiling cable, finally replaced mine with a straight one that's also thicker. I don't carry it if I'm just out cruising around though.

Hailstorm - you ride in Baltimore? Someone was locked up the the Hopkins SPH with handcuffs last week, first time I'd seen it. I go with either a cable around the seatpost (integrated lock) or u lock in my messenger bag.

I leave my heavy kryptonite chanin and padlock locked to hitdching post at the office...to heavy to carry around. In my bag I have one of those small wedlocks, i use that to secure the front wheel.

Molly Lock and chain get carried in the bag, though if I keep this bike riding thing up maybe someday it will fit around the old waist. If Im just running around the neighborhood I carry Kryptonite mini U in my pocket and will lock to whatever is available.

u-lock usually goes onto the right-side strap of my backpack, inside the pack if i want to confuse myself for some reason. haven't settled into a pattern with the cable yet. when i was working last year, i'd leave the u-lock on the bike rack all week and take it home on weekends, but that may need re-thinking now i have a bike i care about.

I don't generally need a lock, but I keep a cable lock stuffed in my bag at all times. My wife uses a snowboard cable lock, which is always at the very bottom of her bag. It's a bit too flimsy for my liking, but it's only for emergencies.

Why not order from the website? I keep my krypto-coiled lock on the front of my seat post, stays out of the way. I still need to get a good u-lock which will probably go in my bag.

(u-lock) my back pack for the most part, but if i don't have that i put it on the seat post attachment that it came with, but that can be bother some, either it sways if pointed foward, or if i have it pointing backwards, it's a bit in the way. so mostly it's in my already heavy pack.

I use a u-lock and I find it's easiest to stick it in the cross-strap of my messenger bag, with the third strap locked through it to prevent it from falling off. It doesn't get in the way, I have less weight on my back, and I can remove it in half a second when I need to use it. It's also handy in case I need to wield the u-lock as a weapon :D
