Timbuk2 or Crumpler for laptop

I need to get myself a bag to carry my laptop (Dell Inspiron 630m or Apple PowerBook 15" depending on mood) along with a magazine or two, change of clothes, lightweight towel.

Been looking at the large timbuk2 messenger (http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/retail/ca...9&categoryId=6) or a large Crumpler.

Currently leaning more towards the Timbuk2 as I can have it made up custom and because their website is usable. Anyone got any experience of both and can persuade me I'm doing the right thing?

I use the Timbuk2 with a laptop sleeze, much lighter and flexible way to go. I bought an ordinary courier bag which is much lighter and their laptop sleeve which I can put into it. Works fine for me 2 years later

You might want to check out the Novara from REI

It has a sling-like strap that, IMHO, is more comfortable than standard messenger bags even with strap pads. Plus it's less expensive.

I'm not sure chrome is us-made these days.

I love my Timbuk 2, I have carried the 12 inch IBM Thinkpad Laptop to my current 15.4, and the bag keeps it safe and the securing straps keep it from moving around. Love that bag

re: timbuk2: check the website--some of their bags are still made in SF. I own an old timbuk2 el ocho(size medium), not big enough for my needs.

Now I use baileyworks, superpro model, size large--it is much more comfortable than the old timbuk2. Rests on my shoulders just right, like the buckle in the middle, it is easier to get off my back.

Don't make me (and my 1.3 billion friends) come over there!!! ;) :D

I actually think brunop has the right idea, but I'd say don't just go domestic, go local -- look for a bag made in your immediate area. That way, you can get a nice bag, support a local business, and get good karma all at once. I'm not familiar with UK messenger bag companies, but I'm sure you can find something nice.

What's with the clasp / buckle on Chrome bags? They look like recycled seat belt clasps from 1970's automobiles. Pretty heavy duty looking.

I think the most important thing for a messenger bag that carries a computer is that it be waterproof. Fit and waterproofness are your main criteria. I have an older model Ortlieb one that I have carried my laptop it. No sleave or anything. Just chuck it in there with my lunch, thermos, and stuff.

you look like you want a messenger bag but how about a backpack? This is what I use....

The site also has some messenger bags though:

If you are in Croydon you may be able to pick up a Crumpler Sheep Scarer or similar for cheap at TK Maxx. They seem to have a ton of them lately.

Gaarrgghhhhhh!

I never think about TK Maxx (TJ Maxx or our Merikin cousins) for things like bags.

Ahh well - I ended up with a very busy man from the local computer store as the LBS didn't ave anything in stock.

not to add another variable, but get whatever bag you want and then protect it well with this:

i ride with a chrome metropolis and this and it works perfectly

Check out Chrome bags; they have good looking bags that are very functional and good customer service. Something Timbuk2 didn't seem to grasp. When I carry my laptop, I carry it in a Chrome Metropolis inside of a laptop sleeve. No problems so far!

The tag on the inside of my Chrome bag proudly declares "Made in the USA". Not sure if it's the tag or the bag but regardless..I love my Chrome. 'tis an awesome bag.
