Nutcase?
1 Attachment(s)
So yesterday I went to the LBS to pick up my Delta bike rack. I attached my BOB Ibex trailer to my mountain bike and off I went. On the way there, a car slowed down along side me. A young man stuck his head out of the window and yelled, "What's that? What's that on the back of your bike?" Without much time to say anything else I yelled, "It's a BOB!" The guy laughed hysterically and yelled, "A BOB!" I continued on my bike trip to the LBS. I picked up my Delta bike rack and headed back home. On the way back, I noticed a man in a store parking lot with his car hood open. He appeared to be having engine trouble and another man was helping him fix the problem. The man glanced up at me. He stared at my BOB trailer and bike with an expression of bewilderment as I rolled on by. I couldn't help but laugh (on the inside of course). Apparently, I was the strange one! I have even been called a "nutcase" on this forum over the fact that I have not owned a car for 3 years. Oh well! I still refuse to own a car unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

That is a cool and purposeful-looking rig. YOU aren't the nutcase.

Speaking as a guy who is constantly being stared at, pointed at, yelled at, shrieked and laughed at virtually every single day, I love the attention. I currently ride a BikeE AT semi-recumbent and most folks around here have never seen a bike like it. I often ride my customized trike (with all chrome springer forks and wide cruiser bars) as well as Giant Stiletto chopper and a Firebike Bling Bling stretched custom cruiser. Not only do you get rubber-neckers and lots of compliments and comments, I've seen them almost cause rear-enders. Nope, I'm not the nutcase either: they're the ones in boring old cars.

sweet bike!
only reason i'd call you a nut is if you didn't go get that bike/trailer combo dirty on the trails once in while! |
Cool. That one-wheeled trailer looks way more efficient that the two-wheeled kid hauler ones I usually see.
I don't think I'll ever be car free. I will always need a truck to haul lumber. But I am trying to minimize the number of days I drive. The most relaxing vacations for me are the ones where I went somewhere and didn't drive the whole time I was there. |
Na. Check out these trailers mentioned in the thread. Build your own!

Let's see here. I moved out when I was 17 and got my license a few months before i truend 23. I never bothered to hook up a trailer to my bike however. That would be "too weird" for me. |
Love my BOB trailer. One other benefit is that folks give you way more room when passing.
Also, if you ever do any touring it's a huge improvement over balancing all of the different bags. Without getting too political, the only nutcases are folks blowing through $3/gallon gas in trucks that get less than 15mpg. |
Yeah, I'm thinking about building one of those trailers on the instructables web site. Looks pretty straightforward, maybe a Saturday and about $50.
