This evening I pushed past my comfort zone and took 7 minutes off of my commute. And that included stopping to take off my windbreaker. 1:13 from Alexandria through the streets of DC, up the escarpment...yippee. |
Hey Velogirl,
That's a nice time for your commute. If I'm the Crazy Biker Man then you some be the Crazy Biker Girl. LOL The go fast is so much fun, isn't it. What I do when I get to used to riding at a set speed is down shift and then spin like crazy for a mile. Then just shift back up and ride. Your legs will be wanting to go so they will spin faster after you shift back up. Also to get up to speed at the start of your ride spin like crazy for a mile then ride on. I run in 7th gear at 15 mph, thats a Cadence of 82, for the 1st mile. This will make me ride faster through my commute. And eat everything. LOL |

Whoa, that's hauling the mail. Good to see you back on the threads, Dave. Hey, how about postig your power breakfast recipe again? I bet the new folks on this thread would be interested. For those of you who weren't here last year, Dave posted a fabulous recipe to get started on a VLC. I have made it many times, it's awesome and really stokes you up for the ride! |
13 miles one way. Does that qualify for a VLC?
|
If it's long to you than, YES it's a VLC. Welcome to the VLCC.
|
After my rough ride on Wednesday I decided to bail on my plan of commuting 2 days this week. I dont need to rush in to fast anyway. Now the plan is to ride in next tuesday and friday.
|
Welcome aboard Riedelmaster. Its good to see so many new posters joining the old timers. We have some serious speed demons on the VLC these days. Cigtech I'll have to try some of your suggestions to see how they work on my ride. I've already found it works well for me to ride hard for two days and then have a day when I ride easier and recover a bit and then push hard the next couple of days. I find this helps with both speed and endurance.
Had a nice ride this morning with many more bike commuters showing up every day. Its so routine now that the ride hardly merits comment. |
I also try to race the blue hairs. LOL Oh, I starting to go gray, that's not funny. !?!?!
I do try to change up my ridding habits from time to time. Like riding backwards down hills or standing on the seat for the whole trip, and do hands stands on the bars. LOL, just kidding. It does help to ride hard the first couple of days then just seat back for a day. I try to find some one going the same way as me and start up a conversation. This way I have to slow down to ride with them. So find whats works for you and then change it up so you don't get in a rut. |
Good to be back Mars.
We had a little bit of an issue with the usage of internet here at work, but all seems to have calmed down (not me btw)!! I'll find the recipe and post it tuesday (we have a public holiday monday) so as it will have a week for people to see it before it drops out. I am working on a new one, this is going to be the bomb!! Great ride in again, lovely sunny warm weather, not much more to say. I'm feeling good at the moment after a brief period of feeling slow and almost as if my blood sugar levels were playing up. The only thing I am doing different is NO ALCOHOL, and boy has it made a difference. I may stay off it for good. Have a great weekend all. |
Hey cigtech, I'll give you 10 bucks for that bike. You'll double your money. :)
It was a gorgeous morning to ride. That is all. |
Thats a great deal for the bike! Maybe sand and spray paint it :-) change couple parts and it'll be like NEW!

It started out being long to me. But I feel a little down when I get to work/home now. I want more! I need to move further away from work. Until then I'll just keep finding a longer route... |
I did my last practice run today. Up and back with full load in 2:05, still a little slow, but fast enough to get to work on time. Then took the bus/metro into my first day at work, got signed up at the gym, etc. so I can start really commuting on Monday. It was a nice ride this morning, but a littled windy going in - enough that I was over 10 minutes faster on the way back. Looking forward to Monday.

Thanks HubCap, But I think I'll just ride it into the ground LOL.
This morning I had a headwind of 16 mph so did not make good time getting to work. But the same wind got me home in 54 min. with a ride of 17.89 miles. That's a avage ride time of 19.4 mph. I'm still on the huffy till I get new tires for the Peugeot. Heres is a picture of the sun set from the bay bridge tonight. |
Singlespeed, mtn. bike, when I'm in that jumpin mood.
