crazy legs

anyone else get restless legs during the day on a commuting day? mine drive me nuts sometimes. they don't really want to go out at lunchtime and ride another 12 miles, but they sure don't want to just loll around under my desk all day either till it's time to go home. they just feel better if they're under some kind of flex all the time.

second problem is a bit more intermittent and weird. i occasionally - like every couple of days - get really intense, nerve-pinch pains down the outside of one thigh for a few minutes at a time. definitely not a muscle cramp or anything from that category. it feels like a nerve, but it always just comes out of nowhere when i'm quietly minding my own business and not doing anything strenuous. it's a major ow while it lasts.

ideas? anyone? bueller? you people are more interesting to ask about it than doctors, at least to start with.

I had a very similar blinding pain like you describe. It turned out to be sacroillitis. It is an inflamation of the joint by your tailbone. The pain is often felt shooting down the side of your leg, almost in the hip area. The only thing you can do about something like that is rest and take nsaids.

people always ask me why my legs are constantly bouncing up and down whenever i am sitting somewhere.

most of the time i don't even notice i am doing it.

i guess i shouldn't tell everyone it is my legs telling me thay'd rather be biking.

I don't know about the weird pain, but my legs are terribly restless at work to say the least. If i'm listening to music I'll just slip off my shoes and let my feet play the drums (left=high hat, right=bass drum):they seem happy and no one is any the wiser. I've thought about getting one of those under-desk pedal thingies, but I've heard they are really noisy, soooo....

I often go for a walk at lunchtime. Three miles in around 50 minutes.
Knowing nothing about your training, I will make a diagnosis based on ignorance and would say that you may need to stretch. Look up "IT Band" on the internet and see if that is your problem.

"ITB Syndrome" is what you're getting at, I think. I looked into it a year ago when I thought I might be suffering from it. Better shoes, adjusted position and stretching on and off the bike made whatever it was mostly go away.

thanks. helpful answers, and yay, i'm not alone with the preschooler-at-sunday-school legs. currently what i do is slouch (legs keeping me from falling off chair), prop (legs laid out on computer tower), stretch all the time and if i'm really feeling nuts go out and walk around the building a few times every hour or so. so long as i keep them under some kind of mild strain all the time i don't get too squirrelly.

the pinched nerve is probably something like what chimpunk says it is, considering my disorder. shoulda kept that rheumatologist appointment today, bleh. i'll keep an eye on it, and thanks. there probably isn't any conclusive solution i'd be willing to take into my life anyway.

I occasionally get the Restless Leg Syndrome if I've been riding FAR and FAST. Or, sometimes, when I haven't been riding at all, just sitting in front of a monitor all day. Weird.

Now, is this all a big joke and a funny name for something, or an actual name of an actual disorder?

RLS in the tearms yall are speaking of is common even to noncyclist who have been sationary for too long. Back in school I would do it all day, not even noticing.

There is a "real" RLS but its more common in older people and could also happen in your hands, not unlike parkisons.

You might try taking vitamin B6. Mimimizes leg cramps, too.

You need to learn patience. Consider switching to yoga.

I had and still have a similiar pain in my left neck. Nerve pinch caused by too many years of having my neck tipped to one side while needlepointing. Now I have to sleep on my less favorite side or my neck and face start to tingle and hurt. Sudden sharp pains in the upper chest possible caused by acid reflux as doctors have ruled out heart problems. Handled by not consuming any caffine. Your legs pains might be something related to a leg length difference and/or a bike fit problem. One guy with a problem like that added a small block to one pedal. Maybe you need to have doctors and orthopedic experts rule out any medical conditions then have a top professional bike fit session. Luck.

Yes, my legs and I get restless during the afternoon. The only cure is riding a bicycle.

Don't like driving or flying long distances due to having restless legs... gotta get up and move from time to time... sometimes I just stand up and flick my legs real fast just to relieve it.

When I was in my runner phase, I would occasionally get restless-leg-like symptoms while lying in bed at night. I'd get an intense pain along the backs of my legs, and it was somewhat alleviated by moving my legs to a different position.

I stopped running (2 reasons: knee blow-out and increased interest in cycling), and the weird leg thing stopped.

Now I notice I get a pain in the arch of my right foot after about 15 minutes after the start of a ride. I think it has to do with putting my toe down at stoplights, or the way I pedal. I'm trying to alternate which side I lean on when stopped, and see if that makes a difference.

They say that people who fidget tend to be less overweight, or less likely to be overweight in the first place. Maybe I should fidget more, hee hee.
