Saw a fox on the path here in Denver the other day.

The best though, was riding in the mountains in Arizona, and had to stop for a whole herd of elk. I never realized quite how BIG they are!!!!

On Friday's commute I lost a blinkie (how very "me" :)) and went back to find it, and I found a mama duck with her batch of ducklings! My camera's batteries were nearly dead but I managed to score one photo before it shut itself down again.

Oh, and I did find the blinkie too :) The ducklings are all huddled right behind Mama Duck there.

Whenever I ride near water, I seem to see foxes. I've ridden right into the middle of herds of deer. Seen raccoons scampering across the road. A friend of mine screamed and pulled his legs up over his handlebars as he rode over a bull snake. That was funny to watch/awful to see.

This morning, for the first time, I actually SAW one of the skunks I've been smelling most summer nights for the past few years. Oddly, I didn't smell it until I was about 3 blocks past it.

I saw a cockatiel… actually I heard it first, and recognized it as “non-native”
an apparent fugitive :)

vrkelley 05-22-06 07:19 PM

Every day I have to pass this dead racoon. The thing is the size of a skate board and reeeeeekkkkks. Serious road kill!

This morning on Mt. Diablo (SF Bay Area) I passed within about 5 feet of a pair of coyotes. They just stared at me as I went by and then went about their business. Then, about 200 yards up the road, I came within about 20 feet of a deer. Another 1/4 mile up the road I came across a couple of banana slugs on the road. It's nice to be able to take a ride up the mountain on the way in to the office.

luckysnafu 05-23-06 12:04 PM

Saw a small brown snake on the road which I practically ran over on my way home last night.

crtreedude 05-23-06 12:16 PM

A stallion, mare and very young filly crossed my path this morning.

acroy 05-23-06 12:33 PM

typical: cats, squirrels, lots o mean dogs (always call Animal Control)
not so typical: rabbit, cyote, occasional snake, confused cow outside the fence, possum, raccoon, armadillo!

bike v. animal: small bird tried to fly thru spokes while i was railing around corner. Bird lost many feathers but flew on, seemed uninjured. Scared me!

last week I saw a frozen horny toad and a roadrunner. The roadrunner was really cool, it was hanging out by the bike rack and I got a real good look at him. I didn't think they lived up here at 7,000ft.

BikeManDan 10-23-06 11:15 PM

I see wild turkeys every so often

Makes me a bit hungry...

mister 10-23-06 11:37 PM

Since I moved, I mainly see flattened, rotting carcasses of squirrels, rabbits, and cats. I saw a bobcat once. I pass a house that has horses, but I don't count those.

stevenhyde 10-24-06 01:38 AM

theres some rabbits that are always in my yard. i see them sometimes on my ride. squirels, songbirds, vultures, hawks, armadillos, blue herons, and my favorite loose dogs which i get to chase me so that their owners get to run.

(offtopic)
ride past a house, see owner, tell owner to grab dog cause dog likes to run, owner doesn't, i call dog who runs after me, i slow down so it catches up, i then speed up, i finally stop and dog catches me, proceeds to lick my fist, owner gets close and i ride away some more, about 1/4 mile from house. HAHAHAH

Here in London there arn't too many creatures appart from the omnipresent rancid pigeons. I do however see at least two Zebra nearly every day (as I pass the Zoo!). Slightly off topic but I think I have identified a new 'urban sport'. It is basically fox hunting carried out on BMX bikes by little hoodrats in the London uniform of cheap sportswear shouting "'ere mate where'd e'go? 'E went dat way bruv" as the fox calmly trots out of the way.The fox having not been rasied from the cradle exclusively on KFC cigs and playstation easily outruns his hunters! The day I see the tables turn and the hunters become the prey will be a truly great one (and not entirely unlikely given how brazen the London foxes are these days)

MCODave 10-24-06 06:37 AM

I saw a Coral Snake - kinda rare. I stopped to look and sure enough he had red touching yellow. Pretty cute for a snake that could kill you in a few minutes.

Oh, and also I ride by a place where there is a flock of feral parrots - plain little green guys, probably of the brotogeris family. (this is in Florida)

Novakane 10-24-06 07:06 AM

Rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks make up the bulk of my animal sightings... And by sightings I mean they appear suddenly beside the MUP and start running beside me darting left to right all the while. I've had a few close calls with squirrels and chipmunks darting suddenly between my wheels but no actual incidents. A rabbit was threatening to do so this morning which worried me more - they're bigger and don't run as low to the ground. (less BB/crank clearance, I figure)

Gulls. Everywhere. A few weeks ago I had a few take off, fly in the same direction as I was riding, dropping little white splatter bombs as they went - I had to decelerate fairly quickly to avoid rolling right into their insidious little projectiles!

If I take the off-road path, I sometimes see some deer, skunks and raccoons as well. There's so many birds about and most of my route is tree-lined, so they're more often heard in the trees but not seen.

edit:

Also seen - snakes, fuzzy caterpillars (might have squished one or two by accident, since you can't really see them until your front wheel is about to pass...), horses, ducks, dogs, cats, geese, groundhogs, and bipedal primates engaged in various activities such as jogging, running, walking, cycling and sitting in large rolling metal cages that spew noxious gasses.

ModoVincere 10-24-06 07:08 AM

Squirrels, Rabbits, dogs, cats, horses, snakes, a red fox sometimes, red tailed hawk that i think was checking me out.
Oh yeah, can't forget the Fords, chevy's, BMWs, mercedes, hummers, infiniti's, lexus (lexi?), and other loud obnoxious road hogs. Bunches of rednecks too.

legot73 10-24-06 07:53 AM

I've had some cool meetings with whitetail deer in some wooded areas of my ride. Yesterday, two were playing chase around a hedgerow in my neighborhood, and ran out in front and along side me for about 20 yards last night. Pretty magnificent to be "running with the deer".

Flimflam 10-24-06 08:23 AM

Other than the above mentioned 'normal' stuff, I have seen a groundhog once - this wasn't on the streets I usually take, but on the main Don valley path (a longer but more green and pleasant alternative) - I stopped out of sheer shock, just hammered on the brakes and stopped right there - I had to double-triple check my eyes - this thing was just happy as a lamb sitting at the path side eating on some grass or something.

In Miami I see a a very disagreeable animal species which I don't think has been identified but I'll describe it.

Both the male and the female of the species are similar to a sloth. They are fat, slow moving creatures. They seem to like to occupy SUVs. The most disagreeable tend to occupy the Hummer.

They have a distinctive, shrill cry, or bleat. Its usually something like "Get the f@ck off the road!"

And the stink of burned hydrocarbons.

rajman 10-24-06 09:30 AM

Just this summer I saw pelicans fishing on the weir on the Bow just downstream of the downtown. It was quite the scene, a bunch of tourists watching, and the pelicans just going about their business. Check it out some time if you are in Cowtown, it's cool.

GreenAnvil 10-24-06 10:41 AM

This morning I saw a HUGE gopher... I mean this guy must have been on steroids...

Last nights commute home... two deer, a squirrel, a bird and someones sweatshirt laying in the road.

This mornings commute...two dead deer, a dead squirrel, a dead bird, and a dead opossum (it might have been a sweatshirt): Makes me a little nervous for the ride home tonight.

acidinmylegs 10-24-06 11:09 AM

the usual: dogs, cats, squirrels, hawks, rabbits, deer

the rare: bobcat, coyote, porcupine, bats, owls, raccoon and what I'm pretty sure was a cougar (shiver)

CBBaron 10-24-06 02:18 PM

It seems does like to run in pairs. On Friday I decided to take a 20 mile detour on the local crushed gravel MUP through the Cuyohaga Valley National Park. This was of course at dusk. I say three different pair of does near the trail before it got dark and I turned around to head home.
You would think that after I left the Park and starting traveling on city streets the wildlife would thin out but there on the side of the road in a industrial area was another pair.

I ride a lot on Maryland's eastern shore. I see deer, domestic llamas and goats, fox, raccoons, possum, land turtles, snapping turtles, frogs, snakes, hawks ( red shouldered, kestrels, osprey) , eagles, turkeys, and all sorts of assorted songbirds. I've seen sting rays in the shallows of some rivers. I never get tired of the animals and on almost every ride will see some sort of behavior or incident that just blows me away.

HardyWeinberg 10-24-06 02:41 PM

Lots of deer and squirrels lately. Possums lurking in our back yard too.

Mariner Fan 10-24-06 02:45 PM

I rode by a skunk last weekend. Lucky for me I got by him before he could get his tail up.
