New commuter and first century
Started commuting back in December with about 7.5 mile commute both ways to work. Sometimes I would vary the route to add miles to it. Finally wore out the el cheapo korean made MTB I bought at the LBS. I'm a Clydesdale BTW 5'11" 240 lbs.Upgraded to a Trek 820 and put slicks, fenders and panniers on her. Immediately noticed an improvement in time and speed. But I kept noticing or sensing her wanting to do and see more. So saturday morning early I decided to try out some roads I have'nt been on before. Beautiful spring day with the scent of green growing plants. The farmers planting their rice paddies. The sun warming my back. The traffic cooperating and behaving. Nice long climbs mixed with short steep climbs. Good wide shoulders most of the time. I was enjoying myself so much that I realized I had rode all the way to the DMZ.I could see the propaganda signs put up by the North Koreans. Kinda weird and spooky with a surreal feeling the entire time. Looked around more and had some lunch and ice cream.
Turned around and started heading back and suddenly the arch nemesis of all cyclers everywhere,Headwinds and Rain.Didn't look at my distance until I got back home.100 kilometers. I felt stoked about that. A milestone for me.Next will be a regular century. Cheers all. |
Best kind of milestone - when you don't know that you are doing it. Always seems less painful to me that way. :-)

Great going, sir! I've been in a similar situation today. Loved it.
