barba 05-21-06 02:32 PM

sorry to hear it. keep an eye on the local craigs list.

dee-vee 05-21-06 02:37 PM

How long were you in the store? You either have a really crapy bike lock or you locked it wrong.

jyossarian 05-21-06 02:45 PM

Just do this http://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html w/ your next bike to prevent a repeat. Sorry to hear about your loss.

apple2gs 05-21-06 02:51 PM

i was in there maybe 5-10 miinutes

Guest 05-21-06 03:56 PM

Do you have a picture? Where are you located? We can keep an eye out if you give us some information to work with. How about a description of the bike?

Fill out a police report. Even if you don't think you'll see the bike again, just fill it out. If the asshat gets caught, you'll at least have a fighting chance of getting your bike back. If you have renters insurance or homeowners insurance, it may be covered.

So sorry to hear about your loss. This sucks. :(

i wish i had a pic but it is a 04 cloudblue ocr3 with jandd Saddle Bag Panniers
thanks for all the replys :)

Please- contact the police IMMEDIATELY and file a report. If you have insurance, contact your insurance company. They'll want to see the police report.

Can you dig up a picture off Google so we can get an idea of what the bike looks like?

Keep checking the pawn shops AND the craigslist. The local one and the nearby ones, ok?

Good luck with the bike situation. I hope you find it.

I hope you got the SN off the bb to prove it's yours if it's recovered.

ScrubJ 05-21-06 06:38 PM

Damn! One of my greatest fears, I try to lock mine every time I'm away from it.

Slow Train 05-21-06 07:14 PM

Let's see - you stop there often. The bike was locked. You were only gone 5 - 10 minutes.

My intuition tells me to suspect one of the gas station employees. They know you're coming and they have ready access to tools to break the lock.

BodiesOfLight 05-21-06 07:19 PM

Is the Kryptonite New York Lock worth the $70 price tag, or would the Evolution ('bout $40) actually be enough? I'll be living in Columbus Ohio soon and need to get a lock. I def want a U-Lock though. The only thing I'm worried about is locking up the front wheel with the frame together with the U-Lock, but I don't want a real big U-Lock because A) they're heavier B) it's harder to break if it's smaller (I've read) C) easier to carry.

If you registered your bike with Kryptonite, they should have that insurance program to reimburse you for the bike too.

I don't see where apple2gs wrote that he locked his bike. My opinion is quick stops are the most vunerable situation because you think it's safe because you're away only a moment. Why spend more time setting up heavy duty locks than you will be in the store? With a "grab and dash", it will take only a minute for a thief to be completely out of sight. That's why I have an extra light duty lock already attached to the frame and takes just seconds to attach to anything big and heavy, like a newspaper rack. It's just to prevent a "grab and dash" theft. It seems to be the most common type of theft.

Best of luck getting your bike back. You might also try scouting around the area for a few days. Some times it's joy riding and they dump the bike somewhere later on.

He clearly states it was locked (sans punctuation, though).

Provided the thieves didn't break the lock then take it with them.

He says to put the U-Lock around the rear wheel, but what about the front one which usually has a quick release? I would think something round the front wheel and frame would be a good set up.

unkchunk 05-21-06 08:25 PM

Oophs, you're right koffee. Got to get my eyes checked. I thought it was "looked" not "locked". Man that's weird. In a full size browser window I keep missing it, while with a shrunken window I pick it up right away.

apple2gs 05-21-06 08:33 PM

it was a a cheap lock with a cable with loops on the ends

but on a side note could any one recomend me a new cummuter
im looking for something still with drops but that is under 600ish

Re-read the 3rd & 4th paragraphs. For extra security use a cable lock to secure the front wheel.

I'm very happy with my New York Lock, I think it was worth every penny, and it can be as heavy as it wants to be so long as my bike is still there when I return. Actually, I use 2 other locks in addition. You can take the girl out of Detroit, but you can't take Detroit out of the girl. ;)

Continue to check the pawn shops for months. I once had something stolen out of my car, and most of them would give me this line of bull that they couldn't bring out merchandise for a couple of weeks or more. It made me very suspicious. So, keep going back. Check the classifieds and any local bike shops that deal in used bikes. Sorry this happened to you.... Hope you get your bike back....

vik 05-21-06 09:58 PM

Sorry to hear about your stolen bike.

I had a bike stolen which I recivered and ever since I use a kryptonite NYC lock. As someone said it is heavy, but you get used to it and it is nice to not worry about your bike. I use a long cable as well to run through my wheels and such.

I get some really envious looks from other bikers when I am locking up my bike next to theirs at the grocery store.
