Very long commute club: week 8
So let's play the games that Lem and Gusboh suggesed. Let's try and guess the ages of our friends here in the VLC and assign an actor/character to them that you think captures your impression of them.
Here are a few of our older regulars off the top of my head:
Lem - already said he was 47, so no guess there. Rick from Casablanca, honest, brave, jaded but idealistic at heart.
Marylandnewbie - my guess is 43. I see him as a good cop charcter quietly fighting corruption in the department. Not the rogue main charcater,, the decent hardworking guy sho comes through in the end.
Gusboh - 34. The funniest guy ever... Dennis Miller.
Cycloholic - 36. Neo from the Matrix.
Jur - 40. Russell Crowe (the way he is in movies, not real life. I I don't think Jur would hit bellhops with phones)
CigTech - 24. +1 Clint Eastwood
Velogirl - 31. I'm going to go with Eowyn from Lord of the Rings. Royalty, but tough and brave.
My wife want the computer now. I will get to more as the week goes on.

Mars, 24? not even high enough.
I know what you're thinking, Did I ride 7 or 17 miles? This is a CigTech 41 mag. home grown calf. One of the most powerful biking legs made in the world. You're thinking I could take him. So do you feel luck Punk?
Show us your engines. Please only in good taste though.

Here is last weeks sta's. If it was not for the road offroading I did the other night I think I could have had a 18 mph average speed for the week.

I'm a youngin' compared to some of you! I'm 29. I'm not very objective so I asked my wife "When you think of me as a cyclist, what character or movie star would you assign to me?" She thought for about 2 seconds and said "Shrek".
I'm really amped for tomorrow as I start my new 13.5 mile commute! Should be tons of fun. I am *really* looking forward to it. I do have to get up an hour earlier to do it, since I don't know how long I'll take. I take 25-30 minutes to do my 5.5 mile commute, so I figure just over an hour ought to do it.

34.2 mph ARTS..... I'm going to go hide now.... Very nice run. But you have to divided that by two
rykoala, it will take you 73 min or so. your 5.5 mile commute is a average speed of 11 mph. so a 13.5 mile ride at 11 mph will take about 73 min. So plane on 75 min commute or longer.
I'd say that
Mars is 50 and ermines me of Caption Picard from star trek. "Engage"
Cycloholic - 32. +1 Neo from the Matrix
Velogirl - ** (age blocked due to me wanting to live you know how girls are about their age) Sandar Bullock for Miss Congeniality

Well, I finally broke down and added some new additions to the commuter. I can't afford another bike so I added some aero bars and new pedals. Can't wait to do the commute with that new stuff tomorrow. Hell, I'm even looking forward to the hills! After a few very cold days, it's supposed to warm up tomorrow, so... yay!
CigTech - nice calf! My female friend cycles with me, and she often comments on the men in tight shorts and she seems to have a fetish for calves. Maybe I'll send her a link to this...

Ok guys and girls - my guesses.
Mars - 45 - Morpheus - or Yoda
Jur - 43 - Russ Crowe +1 (not in a beautiful mind though... Although he does ride a SS... )
Cyclo - 34 - Neo would work, although aragorn would fit too
Velo - 21 - all girls are 21 until they are 75. Oh, and she has to be trinity - she gave it to us big time when we got all 'macho' with the VLC motto/logo
Cig - 32 - The natural - Roy Hobbs
Maryland - 40 - The rookie - Jim Morris
The rest i'll add later, when i'm not sitting in front of the boss (pants are on this time - the oldies will get it).
(btw, Mars got it wrong)

Well I just got to work a few minutes ago. Today started my 13.5 mile commute in the mornings. Wow, what a workout! By the time I got here I was ready to be off the bike. My rear end had started hurting pretty good by then. I left home at 6:04 and got here at 7:10, so it took me 66 minutes to go 13.5 miles, for an average of 12.27mph. I hope to have it down to 60 minutes or less soon! mnt_chick: Its not just the personality. I haven't seen Shrek 2 but my nieces tell me that I look JUST like Shrek when he turns into a human LOL. I also share his charming breath and food appreciation abilities.

LOL velogirl!!
I'm thinking ah, Angelina Jolie (post pregnancy of course!) for me... and yeah, 21 sounds good.
rykoala - good job! Are you doing the round trip today? Me, I'm just doing the ride home today. Shrek as a human is not bad to be compared to - he's big n' cute n' cuddly!

mnt_chick: Thanks! I always ride round trip but the 13.5 miles is just for the morning. In the afternoon I have to hustle home so its just the 5.5 mile ride home. My route in the morning is WAY out of the way but its MUCH more pleasant.

mtn_chick, I was thinking Angelina, too, and since I'm a brunette, it does fit better...
As for you, mtn_chick, I haven't gotten a good handle on you yet, but there's something mighty intriguing about someone who lives in the Yukon! Of course, Yosemite Sam comes to mind, but I don't think that quite fits. So, Angelina it is! or Katherine Hepburn. The Yukon must be quite adventerous. 25!
Gentlemen VLCers..you all are so NICE, and there are not too many nice movie stars out there as far as I can tell. I'm not really much of a moviegoer, so I made the executive decision to expand the definition to famous people in general.
Mars, hmmm, I think he is on the young side, maybe 27. Jeff Gordon because he's fast.
Tibikefor...33 (even though you say otherwise), Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. I don't know why.
CigTech, that's easy, Clint is it. 42. or Steve McQueen.
rykola, 30, lives somewhere called Sparks, Nevada, Yosemite Sam (gotta fit him in somewhere).
Gubosh, 37...I'm still thinking about this one. Robert Redford in his earlier days? There are cowboys in Australila, right?
Marylandnewbie...Liam Neison...42
Cyclaholic...35, 3 kids, no sleep, lots of miles...Mad Max
Moi, Juliette Binoche in Chocolat (or any role opposite Johnny Depp). Either that or the fish forgetful fish--Darla? Dory! Finding Nemo (Ellen Degeneris). Somewhere between 21 and 75 is exactly right!

I forgot to mention in my post a little while ago, that I have newfound respect for you who do 15+ miles every day, each way. Having been doing just 5.5 miles, my new 13.5m commute kicked my butt this morning! Literally! My rear end was aching so bad by the time I got off the bike that I could hardly stand it. I'll get used to it though. I did a 20 mile ride last November that didn't bother me at all, so I know its just conditioning. Things MIGHT work out that I get to do my morning ride on my way home too, which would be nice. It'd be a total of over 2 hours on the bike today

Yep, it will get easier...this is the first year I've tracked my mileage and time. So far this year, I'm over 900 miles and (this is the kicker) 80 hours on my bike commuting! That's alot of butt-time.

Man I don't know what got into me this day but I was flying. I had gone 10 miles in 28 min. when I seen this biker having a hard time with the head wind and all. So I pulled up to her and told her to down shift and fall in behind me. She was doing about 13.5 mph. She answered with a "OK" and off we went. I got it to 17mph and held it there to see what she could do it. But she fell back in a 1/4 mile. So I slowed down and waited for her. She said that it was too fast so I told her to try this speed. Got it up to 15 mph and off we went. After we got to the bridge (1 1/2 miles up the road) I told her to just stay behind me till we got across the road and she did. She wants to be a road racer so I told her to stop and raised her seat and took the handlebars down. Then told her to keep her feet moving and don't shaft till I did. And If I was on the drops that she needed to be on the drops too. She answer again with a "OK" and off we went across the bridge. I took her right up too 15mph for a 1/2 mile then picked up a gear and took it up too 17.5 for a 1/2 mile. Then she said that she wanted to go faster. So up a gear and took it to 20 mph for a 1/2 mile. She was right on my back tire. So I kicked it up to 21mph and she was right there with me till we got to the Wall. On the top of the wall we started ridding side by side and she asked how fast she was going. I told her and she almost fell over. She said that her legs did not burn any more and that she felt better with the bike set the way I fixed it for her. I told her I commute to work and that I had put in 3500 miles this year on the bike. I told her that she just needed to get the right person to help her train and some more miles on the road. She is in the Air Force and wants to race the Marines in their yearly bike race this November. So she asked if I ride this road at this time every day and I gave her my ride schedule for the next 3 weeks. She met me on the bridge on the way home and we road like the wind.
I did a 55 min run this morning even after helping her with her training. That’s an ARTS of 18.68. Then on the way home I had an ARTS of 21.5 mph.
I’m going to have to slow down more. On the bridge She ask if I would run it as fast as I could to see if she could keep up. I said “Are you sure” and she said, “don’t even look back and if you do , do not to slow down.” So I took it up to 37 mph and run the bridge. When I got to the other side 2.89 miles she was no where to be seen. I had to wait 4 and a half minutes for her to get across. We had an 11 mph tail wind. That gave me an ARTS of 31.88 mph for the 2.89 miles. Man I could not catch my breath. It took about 4 minutes for my hart to come down to a pace that I felt like I was not going to pass out. NEVER TRY THIS AT HOME BOYS ARE GIRLS, I was flying passed people on the bridge and hearing all kinds of stuff. Like “Holy ****” “Look at him.” One kid about 14 tried to take off way up in front of me to see if he could, I guess stay up with me. Will I covered the 50 yards and passed him in about 5 seconds. A roadie coming the other way held at me to slow down. I just waived and keep on going.
When she caught up with me she said, “ I never seen a biker take off like that before.” I laugh and said, “Me either.” Well it looks like she is going to be riding with me to work up Gandy Rd. and across the bridge almost every morning. And then if she can, ride back at night the other way with me.
I will see if I can get her up to speed with out putting me or her in the ER

Good read CigTech. We sure need to get you and Cyclaholic together. Your draft probably sucked a few people right off the bridge - that must be why the roadie going the other way flagged you down - he lost his riding buddy in the blast. Or maybe that's his GF you were drafting along. "Hey honey, wait up!!"

Yeah rykoala, doing that 2-way commute at these long distances is pretty awesome! I wish I had the option of taking a shorter route on the way in. I am so not a morning person.
On my 20-mile ride home, I have to say, I was really wiped for almost the first half. It seems to take me a bit to really get *into* it and start to feel strong, but today it took half the ride!!! Usually it's only the first 10 minutes or so. What is with that? I was a bit sluggish at work today, so maybe that was it.
But the last 10-miles flew by. The aero bars are awesome! I just have to get used to resting on them, but the increase in power up the hills was pretty amazing.
velogirl - Katherine Hepburn, interesting... but I like it! 900 miles is pretty damned impressive on the bike too. Ha! "Butt time" - I like that.
CigTech - 3500 miles. Holy sh*t!!

Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day. i forgot to post my stats for last week, so here they are. 152 miles totoal, all but 7 commuting. I'm mostly off the bike this week and next, my wife's mom is not doing well, so she is off visiting her and I am home with the kids. Kind of nice not getting up at 4:30 actually . . . . Whave a great week
