That is pretty awsome, good find on the blinkie. It has got to cost half as much as the Dinotte Ultra 3. Like a few people on this thread I might have to copy your design.

For comparison, here is a picture of my, now wimpy LD1000 at sunrise...

I would like to wire something like this up. Good write-up.

Mech,

Since last time I looked at the batteries you desire and recommend, I think they may have changed the Product number and my memory has declined somewhat. ;) Is this the one you still like: http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...OD&ProdID=2745?

I'm to a point now where I'm ready to step up the Nova Bull. Unless you have found something brighter and smaller(?). And before I make the 'buy' I wanted to ask the guru.

Thanks for the expertise.

Yeah, I think that's the battery I had in mind :) but if you want to go with something less expensive, then a Radio Shack NiMH battery pack & charger...

...and a connector for the light's red & black wires, and you'd be in business :) On strobe modes (as opposed to steady-burn), the Nova should do about 10 hours on one of those Radio Shack batteries, and you can always keep a second battery pack on hand. :)

Hi Mech,
I am new to this forum.
I would like to get a Amber Xenon Strobe light for my rear rack.

Can you please post links to 1) the Xenon Strobe and 2) the batteries plus charger?

I know you have done this in the past but unfortunately, the links you posted before have expired.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chandra, I haven't used a Xenon strobe myself, but I heard that this one is a good value: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a...ASHER/-/1.html

To power it, I would get a 12-volt rechargeable battery pack and charger from BatterySpace.com.

I hope that helps :)

Hi Mech,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I have ordered the Xenon Strobe lights from your link.
I am not sure which battery to get though as there are quite a few on batteryspace.
Any suggestions / links you might have handy? :)
Thanks in advance !!

This one looks good: http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...OD&ProdID=3380

I don't know how the strobe light is wired, but I suspect you would need to get the matching plug for it: http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...ROD&ProdID=536 Do you have soldering equipment to attach the plug to the light?

mp.chandra 10-29-08 08:04 PM

Hi Mech,
I am not sure how the Strobe is wired but my wife knows how to solder and she can help me with soldering.
We do have a soldering iron.
I ordered the battery, a charger and the cable connector.
Hopefully, we can figure it out.
You're awesome.:thumb:
Thank you so much :)

I was inspired by your clever application of a 12 volt LED strobe and decided to try it myself. It is a retina-searing success! In the pre-dawn darkness on my way to work, drivers now give me a noticeably wider berth. Coupled with a DiNotte 140L, a PDW Radbot 1000, a PB Superflash, and a blue xenon strobe, drivers appear to have the "What the Hell is THAT?" reaction.

I tried to find the Nova Bull strobe, but several suppliers told me it has been discontinued. I asked the nice folks at AW Direct if the Whelen TIR-3 would fire on 9.6 volts. One person told me no, another suggested that 9.6 was just at the 20% threshhold to allow it to fire. I ponied up the $59.99 and hoped for the best. I bought a 9.6 volt NiMH battery pack and charger at Radio Shack (GO LANCE!) and a Traxxas female Molex connector (part #3062) at the local hobby shop to match the battery pack. Inserted the two leads from the strobe into the solderless connector, charged up the battery, and to quote Bob Oppenheimer "It worked!"

I mounted the strobe with zip ties on the Blackburn rack under the saddle:

plugged in the connectors and for $85 I have a brighter and more visible light than the 140L.

Thanks for the idea!
