I would think it would be possible to go a lot faster than that on Negley going over the hill from Sq. Hill into Shadyside.

Another good hill would be down Liberty in E. Liberty, but there is so much traffic there.

The intersection at the bottom of Negley is a much bigger concern, than the one at the bottom of Forbes by CMU.

I've recently been able to hit 41.4mph down a 3/4 mile grade about a mile from my house. It's near the beginning of my commute. It has a stoplight near the top, one about 4/5 the way down, and one at the end. If I hit the lights correct, I can easily hit 40+. I regularly get to 35. The posted speed limit is 50.

This is on a 15 year old, 35 lb Schwinn Highplains MTB loaded with a trunk bag with about 5 lbs of clothes and food, 2 water bottles and 215 lbs of me. I may not accelerate quickly, but I can get quite a bit of momentum going.

There is a 200 meter long downhill that goes into an empty 500 car parking lot at the end of my ride to work each day. I try for a new top speed allmost every day. My record so far is 65.3 km/hr (40.5mph).
If I just coast (tucked as much as possible) down the hill I can reach 50km/hr.

I've been waiting for one of these top speed threads to come by again, as I attained a new personal best for speed, 77.4km/h, this past weekend. Sure, it wasn't commuting (and I don't want to ride that fast on my folder!), but it was fast! This was on what I believe is Gate Hill Road descending out of Harriman State Park. I was riding a bit conservatively, too (feathering the brakes, not tucking into a super-aero position, etc). I'll break 80 no problem once I learn the road a bit better and feel safe going faster. (it's far from home so I've only been there a couple of times)

Every halfway decent hill is Rochester is marred by the same problem. Even if you just want to coast as a reward for climbing the other side, it's, well, unrewarding. My favorite has a pothole-filled, gravel-strewn, very tight, 90 degree turn at the bottom.

My top speed recently is 43.5 MPH, on the biggest longest hill around here. I don't bomb it very often, because there is a 4 way stop in the middle of the hill. It hit it really early the other day and pedaled on through. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

No gboy it is not Wonderland. It is a Private road for the University of Western Ontario that comes off of Western road at the North West corner of the campus.

Ah interesting ... Last year, my commute to Fanshawe from Gainsboro/Wonderland I did decent speeds on the hills going east on Sarnia Rd, south (of Sarnia) on Wonderland, and east on Oxford (east of Wonderland).

I can only maintain that spin for part of a minute though. I need to get going on my geared bike project and go for some (personal) landspeed records.

For those in the twin cities, I did 39mph on Ramsey Hill (it connects Summit Ave with downtown; the steeeeep way) and again once or twice out in Inver Grove Heights on what I don't really consider to be that steep of a hill. I guess it's just the prolongedness. If that's a word.

Try the hill connecting the River road (in St. Paul) to Hidden Falls. I have gone 46 mph down that one. The only problem is you have to turn around and ride back out.

I don't know what caused the wheel wobble. The wheel is true and the frame is straight. I do know that the fork seems a mite flexy.

Scary.
There is a recent thread devoted to that topic. You should post your experience. The OP is looking for examples as he his planning to do a study of this phenomenon. I posted my experiences - they are similar to yours. Mine was on a -73 Schwinn Le Tour. I couldn't find anything wrong with the bike.

Fastest commute speed is 63.5 km/h on my trike (gravity assist). It was along a busy 60 km/h road with a half-dozen driveways to my right, and a big intersection rapidly approaching. I can hit 45km/h without pedalling on that hill, it's pretty sweet...

Now, if only I could find an inexpensive front fairing...

I hit 30 mph today. Granted I was heading down hill, but it was an awesome feeling.

Back in my Austin commute I would hit mid 40's every day ... it was like a mile straight downhill to the river. I always tried to work on my spinning ... I hit 140 rpm once, hold it for a bit, then tuck the rest. On 360 northbound ... nice wide shoulder, no stopping at the bottom. Did have to deal with an exit lane, but it was very lightly used in the mornings. Unfortunately I also had to go up it the other way on the way home in 100*+ heat This was carrying clothing and all commuting gear in a Carradice seat bag on my Surly Crosscheck with 23-25 tires and was very stable.

All time record was comming down the steeper hill on 2222 with no bag ... hit 54 mph. I really wanted to put on a bigger front ring than my 47 to see how much more speed I could get.

For those of you in the San Fernando Valley, I've hit 41 MPH on my Breezer Freedom (3 speed) going down the hill on Woodley Ave. by the VA hospital.
Good thing I'm a veteran and the hospital is there.
Gotta time it just right so I can get thru the traffic light at the bottom.

I hated it on Sat when I was trying to keep up with the people that could coast. Probably between 30-35 on the downhills, but they were pulling away because I couldn't pedal 42x16 fixed as fast as they could just coast... Kind of sucked...

If I wait for the wind to turn and get lucky with a storm blowing through I can hit 45 (limit is 40 posted) for a couple miles or so of flat on the way home. In fact yesterday I had a guy nice enough to run blocker for me in his truck and give me a thumbs up when I finally slowed for a climb.

Fun stuff. I did 40 for a couple of miles on flat terrain a few weeks ago. I had a tailwind, and more importantly, a cooperative van a few inches in front of me, driven by my dad. Good times. I was just about spun out of my 52x12, but barely pushing, considering the speed.

I've lost a rear tire at 45mph... NOT fun as I immediately went off the shoulder and was skiing with my feet more than riding a bike trying to slow it. Needless to say the rim was toast and I was walking the rest of the way.

Oh I was. When it blew it was like the rear was on ice and fishtailed so badly that I went off the shoulder onto grass/rocks. I'm actually surprised the front didnt blow or that the front slipped out from under me. I slid/skid a good 150-200ft and stayed on the bike! I was bringing up the rear and when I got to the bottom of the hill (walking) everyone said my face was white as a ghost.

After that, I really haven't made much of an attempt to really go top speed. I just got back on my bike after 5+ years, and I'm still young & stupid so I'm sure I'll be attempting to pass cars on my way to work soon enough.
