i have only one bike. it's my first real bike. i bought it based on standover heighth. there's about a half inch clearance between the top tube and my stuff. it's 53cm, and i think i might need a 56cm because when i ride i feel like my butt should sit back further on the seat. so for most of my ride half of my rear is hanging off the seat.

No Talent Assclown
I ride a 52cm road bike, but my Ciocc commuter is a 54cm. I fit it pretty well, but I have a bit more reach to overcome. I have long legs and a shorter torso, so the only thing about the larger frame that is to my disadvantage is the top tube length.

My fixed gear is a 56 and my road bike is a 60. My ideal top tube length is probably about 58cm. I have a longer stem on the fixie and a shorter one on the road bike. Both bikes are very comfortable.
They say that stem length affects handling. I notice no difference between a 100mm stem and a 120mm stem. My fixie has a 110mm stem and moustache bars (which effective lengthen the feel of a bike) My road bike has a 100mm stem.
There is a lot more saddle to bar drop on the fixie than on the road bike. That's intentional due to what I use the two bikes for.
In other words, I think a person can go up or down one size and compensate with stem length and seatpost height. One thing is to make sure that the crank length is right. My fixie had 170mm cranks that I eventually swapped out for 175's, and it made a world of difference.
