locking helmet to bicycle

Is there anything like a helmet lock for bicycles as there is for motorcycles? Would a cable lock suffice? I'm commuting to school and carrying around my books for my 18 hours of classes is bad enough. I don't want to have to carry around a helmet as well, but I don't want to lose it to a thief.

If you have a longer U-lock and big enough vent holes in the helmet just run it through a vent hole when you're locking up your bike. A cable lock would do the trick too, or a short cable locked to the U-lock.

I would be careful about leaving your helmet in the sun all day though.

I used to do that back when helmets were heavy and had hard shells. I did usually try to do it in shady spots. I'm not sure I would do it with today's lighter helmets, unless I was going to buy a new one every year or two. They just don't take being knocked around as well, especially if other people are knocking there bikes into yours. My Bell V1 still looks better than the lightweight I replaced it with. I would probably still trust that old V1 despite its age, but not the old lightweight.

I've been using a thin cable that I run thru my helmet and my quik-release seat. Granted, you could easily cut thru it with pliers, but I doubt anyone would want your stinky helmet anyway. I feel that it gives just enough protection to keep kids from running off with it for fun (which they would do if it were loose), and with the bike parked in a public spot, has been safe for me so far.

Budget helmets tend to have more polystyrene and fewer bigger vents. My Met helmet is locket to the bike using a std Kryptonite shackle lock.
If your vents are too small, then take some plastic covered cable with loops at each end and run it through your lock.

Are there lockers available on campus?

I have an Onguard u-lock (the shorter loop one) and lock my helmet into the U through the strap. I had my first helmet damaged when it was locked to my bike, when someone thought they'd try and take my bike from my back yard (I later found it across the street, stripped of only the saddle).

I figure this is acceptable, direct sun/heat being the only consideration. If someone wants to cut the helmet strap to get it, then they've already made it either useless (can't use the strap) or very dangerous (one side of the triangular strap piece I feed the lock through is cut) to use, and frankly, they can have it - I'll not like doing it on the theft principle, but I have no quarms in getting another helmet if it means it saves my head from becoming some of that nasty road juice we all know and hate...

I'd honestly not considered using the vent gaps in it, but I would need a longer U on my lock for that (one regret in my lock purchase!), however I plan on getting at least one more lock anyway.

Failing leaving it on the bike, I just clip it to a shoulder strap on my backpack and walk around like that - not totally convenient, but it works.

I always just hang my helmet over the handlebars, and it's never been a problem. Who wants to steal a helmet anyway?

I guess I might feel differently if I had a fancy $100+ helmet, but I usually stick with the cheaper ones.

Exactly. I lock mine through the U-lock shackle just to be on the safe side, but I wouldn't worry much either way. Bike thieves don't want helmets.

I'm doubling locking, U-lock and kryptolok (cable with key'd lock). The U-lock goes through the frame and rear rim, and the cable goes through the frame, front rim, seat, and helmet. Of course, I always look for a shady or covered spot.

caloso 08-24-06 03:23 PM

I just run the u-lock through the straps. Oh, and it reeks, so I can't imagine it would be worth stealing.

When I was in highschool, I'd put the helmet in my locker. The few times I rode onto the campus of my college, I either brought the helmet with me, or locked it through the straps.

I don't lock my helmet and it has never been stolen. Who wants to wear a helmet that's encrusted with two years worth of my sweat? And if someone does steal it, a new one is cheap enough that I can easily replace it. It's just not worth the effort of worrying about it.

If I was going to lock up my helmet however, I would probably put it in one of my panniers and lock the zippers together with a small padlock, after locking the panniers to the rear rack with another small padlock and those little cables that you use to secure your seat and seatpost.

same here. there's no use going to the effort of getting it through a vent when the straps are just as effective.
