Found a bright yellow one on clearance last year. Completely waterproof,with a hood that covers my helmet,and it has vents and breathes pretty well. I wear it by itself down to the mid 30's,then put a wicking longsleeve under it when it gets colder.

I use this all year round, snow or rain included.

Colorado can run 15F in the am and 60F in the afternoon. I prefer to layer appropriately. Using a thick jacket limits my layering options.

thanks for all the replies. i think i'm just gonna go with the SOMA wind/rain shell. it's cheap enough, light enough, and I've got plenty (2) of wicking longsleeve shirts to go under it.

you're right, Data, layering is definelty the way to go here!

I use an ibex softshell, and an mec ferrata myself for non downpours. But if you look at the scale of breathabilty of materials, event is a lot better than many of the softshell materials available today. The fact that someone can wear a w/b and still be better than half the crap sold as a softshell is a good testamanet to the functionality of it. As slvoid says, winstopper and goretex are the same base material, and a lot of people buy it as a softshell.

Personally when i wear a hardshell, i wear the most breathable made (event) and when i wear a softshell I also wear the most breathable made (dryskin).

I just wear a waterproof/breathable J&G jacket over a longsleeve compression top and a T-shirt, down to about 25*F. Below that I will find some extra layer to put on. All I want from the jacket is to stop the wind.

I've been intrigued with the PI barrier jacket. Looks stylin. However, I have a few pieces of clothing to add to my winter commuting gear. Plus, I am aquiring tools for my road bike build next year.
