Going from bike commuting to run commuting

I've been bike commuting regularly for the past few months, and it's been overall great. I've got the panniers to make carrying easy, a good route that's safe, and a new SweatGUTR that keeps the sweat out of the eyes. It's been a fun time, with a 7 mile in and 7 mile back route.

I like staying in shape and I run 5ks pretty regularly. (Strangely, I'm not a bike racer ... yet!) I've recently started trying to save time during the day by run-commuting back from work. I started with a 5.5 mile route (sidewalks that I avoided on my bike), then cranked it up to a 9+ mile route on long days. I suddenly realized that I was "run" commuting! Plus, I literally "ran" through all the rush hour LA traffic and saved about 45 minutes of workout time in the process. Interestingly, when I bike, I find it much harder to get a reasonable workout during rush hour, due to the traffic & lights. It becomes more of a "small sprint" interval session, with mad sprints between lights that don't seem to last more than a few blocks around here.

For running, I have to leave my clothes & work shoes & books at work, since I only carry a camelbak on the way back home, so it's not totally ideal yet. (Don't think I'll find a workaround to this one...) This means I'm forced to take the bus into work in the AM since I don't really feel like leaving my bike overnight outside (maybe a folding bike would work here....!)

I think I may alternate every few days between running & biking - with the panniers, I can "refresh" my stash at work! If you folks out there have any more creative ideas to make something like this work better, definitely let me know - I'm still experimenting!

I've heard of doing that before. I also used to work with someone who roller skated to work. Not rollerbladed. Good old-fashioned disco roller skates.

I would think running to work would be hard because it is hard to run with any kind of backpack on.

any way you could keep your bike somewhere inside your work? then you could bike to work, run home, run to work, bike home, bike to work, run home, run to work, bike home, ad infinitum.

If it ever rains really hard you can throw swimming in there too.

You'd be the first triatholocommuter I've heard of!

Cool! Last month, IIRC, I took the subway on the way to Circuit City for an emergency video card purchase, but the trains stopped running because of some flooding or something from the rain. I ended-up running a couple of miles the rest of the way along Broadway because the buses were crowded and I had to make it to CC before they closed!
