Gusboh -- Thanks for posting the links to previous threads since people had come up with numerous good ideas.

DL -- Nice effort with the tools you have. We're such a creative group.

OK I am now on day 2 of tending a sick kid and I am beginning to have BTs (bike tremens) -- a sure sign of commuter withdrawal!!! I think I'm going to have to squeeze a longer ride in on Sunday to reset my commuter psyche. Ride safe everybody.

Newbie: Just think that you get to have more parent child quality time. Do you have any good board games?

Everyone, great ideas on the patches.

If anyone is celebrating Rosh Hashana, Happy New Year.

I received word yesterday that Light & Motion is going to send me a new battery gratis. Since my battery just quit accepting a charge, they do think it was a manufacturing defect. I tend to agree, since I haven't "abused" it.

Props to Light & Motion (and Roll: my bike shop!) for stepping up even though it was far outside the "battery warranty" (90 days... I owned the light for 1 year and 10 days when it died). Hopefully my new battery will be here soon... In the meantime, Roll allowed me to borrow one of their display lights.

Nice ride in today. Something out of the ordinary happened on the way in. I was approaching a stop light, traffic had stopped and I has just making my way up the the light. I came to a stop and the passenger window of the car next to me rolls down and a woman yells to get my attention:

“Excuse me! Excuse me!”
“Yes?”
“I just wanted to thank you for stopping at the stop light.”
“Oh! Ha ha, no problem”
“So many cyclists don't stop; they're crazy. I just wanted to say thank you.”
“Yeah I know what you mean, thank you.”

Out of the two Gusboh posted, I like the "more appropriate" one...not because it's more appropriate but because of the weather reference.

Tibike -- I'd rather ride on a slow, overcrowded, overheated Metro bus to work than play a board game. Actually I have been putting him to work on little tasks to get ready for bike camping next weekend.

As for patches I think the more appropriate one is better because of the weather reference. Although I am thinking of putting the other one on a t-shirt for when I'm out drinking with friends.

In 2004, three weeks before my first Century, I pretzeled my rear wheel on a wood covered bridge. I was 12 miles out from home. I rode with the wheel rubbing for about 3 miles to a LBS where they gave me a loaner. I used the inflated cost to buy my new bike - don't want me to bonk with a heavy-a$$ bike on the Century do you? I was amazed - shifters on the brakes!

Hehe. I bought my first "road bike" (actually a cyclocross bike) last summer... first road bike I've ridden since the early 1980s and the Ross Compact my parents bought me. I got into MTB in 1986 or thereabouts and hadn't owned a road bike since.

Anyway, after starting up my 14-19 mile commute, I decided a road bike was in order. As I looked at the LeMond Poprad I eventually bought, I said "gee, it has little extra brake levers like my old 10 speed." Everyone in the shop went "ooooooooooooooh, it's been awhile, huh?"

And I didn't even think to ask how to shift. Had to have someone show me. The LeMond looks like it could have downtube shifters... But really has what I have since heard are called "brifters." Hehe.

The new crop of road bike still do amaze me. I picked up a guy's Trek Madone the other day... Yikes... Light as a feather...

Cig -- I think you've got a contender there. +1 on changing "Verry"

Ducati -- I agree on the lightness of new bikes. My son's new Trek with a steel frame is surprisingly light. If I ever get myself down to a more resonable weight I think I'm going to hunt for a lighter bike. I've concluded that very few bikes are heavier than mine, so switching to a lighter bike could make me a real speed demon.

Glad to hear no one had any serious accidents or altercations yesterday. As for me I am living in a plague house -- both my wife and son are breeding cold germs. Hope to be back on the VLC Monday.

Newbi, the bikes weight is not what limits your top speed. It you have two bikes and one is supper lite. The lite one will get up to top speed faster. But it will still only give you the same top speed. Your legs will get and stay stronger with a heavier bike. I ride with 40 lbs bike when loaded for work. And still average 21 to 24 mph crousing speed. With a lite bike I just get up to speed faster, that's all. Now as far as average speed, that will increase due to the faster take off form all the stop lights.

Agreed. If you live in an area with hills, a light bike will feel (and be) substantially quicker since you accelerate/decelerate and lift (the bike's mass) so much.

A couple things...

1) If we call it the XCC, Extreme should be spelled Xtreme

2) The spokes and then the picture bicycle seems a bit redundant to me. Plus the spokes in my opinion clutter the background making it hard to see the weather depictions.

...I think I'm up to $.04 now.

Oh and yes...I'd buy one once a design is agreed upon.

Cig, I'll buy one also when they are done

I reviewed my log today and realized I cleared 2000 commuting miles for the year this week!

My family knows that if the radar shows red, I scrap the ride. This happens a couple of times a year and when they pick me up, there's a sigh of relief that I'm NOT riding. I usually feel pretty deflated but console myself thinking...There's a difference between hard-core riding and just plain ego (or stupidity).
