New GMC road Bike, what do you think.

Seen this bike on Amazon.com, and have been toying with the ideal of getting one. From the reviews on Amazon it looks like it is well worth the money. But you really don't know till you get one.

Here are the specs.

The GMC Yukon XL 700C 14-Speed Road Bike is built around a lightweight aluminum 6061 road bike frame (20-, 22-, or 25-inch frame) and Shimano tourney 14-speed gearing. The bike features high-profile Vitesse aluminum rims that look as good as they perform, and a Vitesse racing saddle with an alloy seat post for a smooth ride. Lastly, Shimano STI shifters and an alloy crank set round out this sturdy road racing cycle.

I don't know much about the Yukon, nor am I a man with vast knowledge of components, so I can't really help you out here, but I can offer two little bits of tangentially useful information.

1) I do have one of the Cadillac RLE 1.8's and and I love it. I tried out a few of the bigger names in the same price range at some local bike shops (e.g. Trek 1000, & Giant OCR 2 & 3), and found it to be the nicest ride of the bunch, and at 750$, it was far cheaper than the others as well. Plus some of LBSs sell the Cadillacs, so you might not have to do all the fitting and adjustments yourself.

2) Having said all of that, at 300$ you can probably find a much nicer used bike. Well, this depends on some things like where you live, and if the moons are aligned well over ebay for you (it's much harder to find a good deal there these days, I doubt I'd be able to get a bike like my Univega there for 170$ anymore)

I don't know about that exact model. A guy I work with bought a new GMC bike at Walmart this summer. His is blue and cost $150. It has some pretty crappy components on it. Looking at it, all I can think is you'd have a better bike if you took $25 to a garage sale. That's just my opinion. Other people like new stuff.

I think my friend is happy with his GMC (for the price).

At that price point I would look at used bikes first. There are deals to be had. If you are lucky you can find someone looking to unload their bike to pick up an 07 or a deal on a remaindered 06.

As cheap as I am...anything with STI levers for under $400 is going to be worth it. even if the rest of the bike is crap, you could transfer the drivetrain/shifters/brakes to an old steel frame and come out ahead versus buying the components individually.

wally-world wanted a little more than your Amazon price for it...I think they were in the 340ish range, if that helps the decision any.

I put 1550 miles on my GMC wal-mart bicycle
no one will steal it:)
