So i just started commuting 10 miles a day to get to college and realised ive gain about 3 pounds, is this normal, would you call this muscle mass?

how do your clothes fit? 3 pounds isn't much, but you prob have something that fits snugly and would alert you to changes in your waistline. As a guess from a few thousand miles away.... you gained a pound of muscle, lost a pound of fat, and are carrying about a pound less water. Doesn't really matter if you are feeling good, tho... When I commute my whole day goes better. |
I got my bike as a step towards losing some wheight. I know I've put on a few pounds. I wish I could blame it on muscle mass, but there are two other reasons that are probably more accurate.
1) I can smell the food at local restaraunts as I drive by now, and stop by much more frequently out of impulse 2) Biking makes me hungry. I always upsize my meal or get an apetizer or something less healthy because I say to myself "Its ok, I've been biking. I can eat just a little more" What semester in college are you? Your freshman 15 might have just been delayed. Or all that beer is catching up (I am guilty of this for sure). |
10 miles a day might be 500 calories, might be less even. Not a lot of slack for extra fries w/ lunch, unfortunately.

if you feel hungrier after riding your bike, try to make sure that the extra food you eat is something good for you and relatively low-calorie. it's really easy to justify eating too much because you've been riding your bike a lot. then again, 3 pounds could just be a fluke. im sure you know this, but always weigh yourself at the same time of day, at the same part of your schedule. i do it when i wake up, before eating, but after using the bathroom :)

5 pounds is an average fluctuation for a young adult. 3 pounds for someone over the age of 30. Shouldn't be a concern. Unless you've already averaged in the weight for atleast a week(weighing in at different times of the day). You have to think about water weight. When commuting(exercise) you drink alot more water. Even without exercising; what you eat & drink as a direct effect on your weight. Some fluid & solids take longer to digest. Some meats can take upto 16 hours to compleatly digest. Actually only red meats if I remember correctly. Still some things take longer to leave the body.

If you *just* started bike commuting (within the last 5 weeks) and haven't upped your protien intake, then no, it is most likely NOT muscle mass. Could just be water retention, especially if it fluctuates.

As a high school wrestler, I watched guys sweat off 5 to 8 lbs on a stationary bike, in a sauna, wearing plastic suits in order to weigh in, then gain that or more back in half a day drinking fluids and eating. Moral of the story, weigh yourself when you wake up every day, before eating to track changes. |
I fluctuate 3 to 4 pounds a day. I wouldn't sweat it unless you've been hold that three pounds for several weeks. But I get the impression you just had one reading that was 3 pounds higher. If so, don't worry yet.
