Pedals for Bianchi Bergamo
Hi all, sorry I've not been round much lately: out riding so much I never have time for hardly anything else!
So, here's my question: I've just bought a Bianchi Bergamo and noticed from the git-go that the nylon pedals just won't do for my 15+mile commute around campus every day. Now, the problem lies in that I want to continue to use platforms but also want the increase in power transmission from metal pedals as well as the increased efficiency of clipless pedals, even though I don't have the shoes and nor can I afford both. So, I guess my question is: What kind of plats would you all recommend? I have an upper price range of maybe $75 for the set. Any ideas? Cheers! C |
I just picked up some Performance Forte Campus pedals for $29.99. One side is platform and the other is spd. They get pretty good reviews and might be just what you need. I haven't tried them yet, though. If you can find some decent mountain shoes for not too much you could get the all the benefits of different pedal types with one solution. http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...e.cfm?SKU=2275

Nashbar has wide platform pedals (Land Cruisers) with replaceable "spikes". They give your shoes or sneakers a good grip in all weather. Mine were returns ($20). Regular price is $30.
I don't use bike shoes for commuting anymore. These things are fine for any riding under 20 miles and don't scuff up your dress shoes like toe clips do. |
I use a pair of Shimano SPD pedals I got for $45, and a pair of Adidas SPD MTB shoes I got for under 40 (I think $29!). Pretty close to your target amt. I personally wouldn't ride any other way, once you get used to being "clipped in" it's hard to go back.

Nashbar has pedals on sale now. The Land Cruiser is $20 and they have another promising one (Jaws) for $13.

Thanks for all of your recommendations! I really appreciate the sense of community this site has.
Finally, what would be a good book for one to learn bicycle repair? I was thinking "bicycling for Dummies", but if there's anything else, I'll definitely give it a look. Cheers! C |
