May well be...I just thought it was interesting...and for those of you that just won the lottery and plan to spend your gains at Walmart they now carry Carbon Fiber Bikes:eek:

Found it...it is a GMC Yukon XL and sells for $298

There's a few different models that have very similar features in the Kent GMC line...

That is the one I have. Its branded as a Denali Pro on the bike, but when looked up online it comes up as the Yukon. I have not had a single issue with this bike to date. Only thing I have had to replace are tubes.

PanPanX 08-13-07 08:33 PM

I dont have a Denali bike, but a few years back I had a purple Huffy Stone mountain, that I bought back in 1999. I rode that thing to the ground and all I did was replace the tubes and pedals. the stock pedals would snap in half after so many months of riding it and I would just replace it with $15 pedals i got from rite aid and replaced the brake pads, which i also got from rite aid. I didnt know anything about bike maintance at the time, so every month or so, i would spray all the joints with WD40 that we bought from the 99 cent store. eventually the wheels got so out of shape that the brakes didnt work on them anymore. so I just took the pads off, and sprayed more WD40 on them. and took a hammer and pliers to it, trying to make the spokes straight and getting the weird curvy-ness of the wheels out. i would stand on it to try to un-taco it. and then i would continue to drench that thing in WD40. when the chain was covered in rust, more WD40 was applied to it. then the cable housing got so much dirt in that it didnt work.. i didnt know what to do so more WD40 went into it. i finally just trashed the whole bike around 2005. My commutes back then, from home to school (3 miles round trip), home to work (12 miles round trip), friends house, park, everywhere else many many miles... I've been up and down brown mountian with it many times, and fell and hit hard everytime coming down, been all around the lower seco trail area.. done laps with it at the rose bowl...

*takes a breath* basically what im trying to say is that just because its a walmart bike doesnt mean its crap. I bought the bike $50 brand new at K-mart when it was on sale and rode the living hell out of it. I have a lot nicer bikes now, but when these bikes crap out on me, i'm just going to get some disposable bikes from walmart that im not afraid to lock up and have it stolen.

cradduck 08-13-07 09:42 PM

I don't think they are absolute crap either...but for the money you could get a good quality used bike that you could prolly get more miles out of.

My sentiments exactly. I was about to put down $700+ on a road bike each for my wife and I at a LBS. Somehow I rationalized (very unlike my nature) that living in an apartment with a front patio (where the bikes would be chained) would be quite tempting. I purchased my wife's bike through Craig's List and am in the process of finding one for myself and also getting an old Trek (1985-1988 model) from a co-worker. Will get new bikes someday when we purchase a house with a garage.

I finally found GMC Yukon at the Walmart (surprisingly they never have road bikes my size when I go there) and gave it a short ride in the store (late hours, no one around) and found it ok, but brakes need adjusting, seat wasn't comfy. I'd take Craig's List/ebay/thrift stores over Walmart/Target/KMart.

Sorry, all bikes sold at Kmart or Walmart are crappy bikes. Just because you rode one for 6 years does not mean it was not a POS. A quality used bike will be nicer in every way, and you won't have to throw it away after 6 years.

I'm not sure why you think your "nicer" bikes are going to "crap out" on you. I know guys who have been riding the same bike for 25 years.

My parents reminded me this weekend that of the two box store bikes they bought me as a kid, I'm lucky to still be alive. The first one, an "expensive" (according to Dad) Huffy BMX bike got me stitches on my forehead when to head tube decided it wanted to do it's own thing. They replaced it with a Redline BMX bike that I rode for about 4 very hard years, then sold to another family who supposedly still has it.

Second one was another Huffy, this time a mountain bike. The front brake cable snapped when I went to use it, going rapidly down a hill. I have a scar on my arm from the fence I hit after skidding to avoid a tree. The bike was two days old. The box store refunded the money and apologized.

After that I bought a "Mount Shasta" MTB from a bike shop, complete with old Shimano Deore indexed components and Biopace crank. Rode it for 3 years - ages 12 to 15 - without a problem. In fact, I still own it. I'm now 30.

I'm not saying anything about the Denali, but I nor anyone in my family will ever ride a bike purchased at a department store.

CigTech 08-14-07 02:22 PM

Good for you bdinger, some one has to keep the LBS prices higher then they need to be.

I ended up throwing my Huffy away because I wanted a lighter bike, and I didnt want to invest money in upgrading the parts. The wheels were not true at all, so I've been riding brakeless, the seat was torn, riding with no handle bar grips, chain completely crusted over with rust, theres was probably a ton of dirt in the BB cause i never cleaned it and it would make a ton of griding noises when i pedaled, the grip shifters it had became useless, so i was basically riding single speed... you gotta know that I never did any type of maintance to my bike, other then spray WD40 with it and replaced the pedals everytime they broke....

Also my newer bikes now will be with me forever unless i get into an acident and the frame brakes. I know much much more about bike maintiance now then I did before and I'll never let my bikes get into that condition again

bhtooefr 08-14-07 03:22 PM

Friend of mine has an almost 20 year old Huffy MTB that he's roadized, and it's still going extremely strong.

Do you realize he is the OP of this topic? How is he a troll?

bhtooefr 08-14-07 09:34 PM

Well, techncially one could very easily create a TOPIC that is trolling for replies... and in that case, one could make the argument that CigTech tipped them over by starting the thread. (But, I don't think that's the case.)

dkprnce 08-14-07 11:17 PM

finally

Cig has finally had it. His super hero pedaling powers have been weakened by weeks of constant ridicule. I too have subjected myself to this thread for too long. I think I can no longer suffer the banter of those who can say with a straight face : I got this or that bike and yeah the pedals break after a few weeks and the gears fall off - BUT if you just replace all that stuff, its not a piece of crap. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF CRAP.

Find your rides wherever you wish, be it craigs list, super target or your LBS - all are capable of selling good or bad products - but don't pretend you got something you didn't. If your pedals fall off your $100 bike, ITS A PEICE OF SH_T. If they fall of your $500+ bike - its crap too.

bdinger 08-15-07 08:04 AM

Here's what I don't get, if you really are that fast, and really like the bike enough, and AND really don't like the banter.. why keep posting?

I mean, seriously, you can click on other things. I keep clicking here because the trainwreck amuses me.

Careful, poking sticks at such folks can be addicting.

I think I remember that Cig uses a microphone and transcription program to reply to this thread. Hence, some misspellings and other grammar mistakes occasionally appear. It always helps to read ALL the thread when replying.

I've been here since the beginning, Cig, :). Rock on!

State 08-15-07 12:34 PM

What I really love about this thread is the hilarious claims that cigtech makes, like:
-Hitting a car at 20mph, sliding across the hood, and riding away without ever stopping
-Keeping a 36mph pace over 2 miles!
-Being run off the road at 20mph into a telephone pole, while getting the face of the driver BURNED INTO HIS MIND. Apperently he did not call the police to report a hit and run (as any rational person would), but instead is forever vigilant for that face and will extract his own brand of justice when he finally finds it.

Cigtech's claim that he is using voice recognition software (and that is why he has so many typos) is dubious since he repeatedly makes typing errors, such as "dorp" instead of "drop" in the very first post.

Everything in your world is pefect huh? must be nice.

Some people call the cops for everything...... Other people are more easy going and believe in karma. Again, must be nice to live in a perfect world and have other people handle your problems

I like how you guys call someone with more posts than you a troll.

Just because someone holds a different POV doesn't mean they're a troll.

Are you seriously this stupid? A hit and run is a felony in cases that involve serious injury. If the driver intentionally ran him off the road, it is also assault. Not only is it foolish to not report it to the police, it is irresponsible. People that hit cyclists with their cars should be in jail.

Oh gee well I guess I will stop pointing out how ridiculous cigtech is because he has more posts than me and that means he must be telling the truth.
