My commute just got nicer.

The city finished this over the weekend. Before their changes, this was simply an ordinary 6 ft. bike lane. Now, it's fantastic. I'm a pretty slow rider going up hills and bike traffic gets congested during the morning rush hour. I was getting tired of nasty looks and even some swearing by impatient people who are faster than I am. Now, there's a place for everyone. I took some pictures this last Sunday when it was quiet, but if you want an idea of what the morning rush hour is like, check this out.

Sweeet! Here in New York, we're lucky if a bike lane doesn't abut a row of parked cars.

On the bright side, they did recently paint a nearby lane completely green -- the whole lane, not just a stripe. That's a jolly little lane to ride in.

Yes. If it works out, I could see them doing this on other high traffic uphills as space allows. The viaduct that heads from the bridge in the opposite direction is pretty congested with bike traffic during the afternoon rush hour.

Looks like the double lane is needed. Lots of commuters

That's progress...proof that you can make the bike lanes wide enough...our bike lanes are about a third of that...it makes for some scaryness

What a great idea! We could use that on a certain MUP just outside of Philly, where slower riders (and pedestrians) are constantly harrassed by the pelotons. It's hard to tell from the pics- are the icons different between the two lanes? It sort of looks like the one in the slow lane represents a struggling cyclist .

Bike lanes? What are those? Did I ever mention that Charlotte is a horrible city to try to get around by bike?

They're a little different. Sad to say, I've been late to work the last couple of days, so no time to study them. I'll try to do that tomorrow morning. We don't go with boring stencils here, as you can see from this set of pics.

I'm not like a worldly traveler or anything but I've been to pretty much every major west coast city, and a fair amount of mid west cities. Hands down Portland is the best in my opinion, not only for these reason but just because it's so clean and beautiful.

Plus all the hills over in that area will keep you super strong ;D

I would absolutely love to move up there someday, but my job is keeping me here for the time being.

I like that double-wide one-way. Still annoyed by a double-wide 2-way lane I have to deal with from time to time though.

Pretty cool. The fact that they put this in means one of the traffic planners realized that it's needed.
