Honestly I think most cyclists run lights in NYC and I'm probably one of the safer ones. You should see the fixie riders, they take a lot more risks than I do.

I stop for half or them in the city and go on the other half. Coming home I stop more because I take my time.

Yeah, it's a bit crazy, I admit. But didn't someone post here not too long ago that Bloomberg has the police focussing on cyclists for this kind of thing? That still in effect?

Also, as a general rule I just don't want to give the peace officers any reason to pay attention to me. I'm not anti-cop, and I don't have/do any kind of criminal record or activity to worry about, but I've also read too many stories about NY's Finest not always behaving correctly with cyclists.

What a crock. Dick cagers aren't gonna become good drivers simply because you stop at red lights. Just stay out of there way as best you can and that's all you can do. Going through a red light when you've got plenty of time doesn't bother anyone and is perfectly fine. In locations where you can bike legally on the sidewalk, it's basically equivalent to crossing in the crosswalk anyway.

I usually stop at reds, it's rare I'll ever go through - I just don't like the fact that IF I get hit (and I don't trust drivers in anyway when it comes to this - signals, manouevers mean dick all to me when it comes to my life, I'd rather stop), I want to know that I'm not automatically in the wrong, which I would be running a red.

Plus, stopping at lights gives me a chance to drain the nostrils, take on some water and get a few breaths of rest and maybe spectate on any attractive scenery (a summer favourable pasttime obviously ;) :D) that happens to be around.

I've taken to ringing my bell going through greens too, downtown anyway - peds tend to run across the street if I'm not 'guarded' by a car coming through with me, and I'm not in the mood to be hitting anyone.
