Trapped!
Oh, I am trapped! Stumon would not blink at this, but I lost my
MARTA card yesterday!
My MARTA card is a monthly pass good for unlimited public transport. I depended on that card to supplement my cycling to work, which, without the card, would amount to a minumum of 140 miles per week.
Sorry, folks, I don't think I'm there yet. But now I have an excuse to try. Every day I use MARTA without my pass, it will cost me $3.50. Wait a minute, if I pull this off, maybe I can start saving $30 a month by not buying my MARTA card. hmmm...
This would be like Mike "losing" his car (which he doesn't drive anyway.) Except I actually am a little nervous about what I will feel like next Thursday.
(Can angels "steal?" I am thinking my guardian cycling angel "stole" my MARTA card to help me complete my cycling destiny.)
Anyway, any tips on increasing distance without adding strain over accumulated daily trips would help me a lot. Right now, my strategy is to "take it slow."

Why not try just one rest day, Wednesday or Thursday. I think you can do it. Then that's only $3.50 a week.

Pete, I could see where it might be difficult to live in Atlanta and rely 100% on bicycle transportation.
I was there for about three weeks. Actually, I was in Atlanta and Duluth, Georgia. Maybe my exposure was dimented because of Duluth. It seemed to me that the infrustructure was poorly calculated. Atlanta seems victim of urban sprawl that puts great distances between the edges of the city and surrounding.
There are main trunks and then branches off of the main trunks that don't really go anywhere and don't connect with any other roads or trunks.
As a result, there are MAJOR traffic jams along the main roads that would be very bike unfriendly - plus no bike lanes or sidewalks (at least in the area surrounding Atlanta).
Is this correct, or was it my narrow exposure? If this is par for much of Atlanta, then I could see where you would at least need to go by bus or car.
I am very interested to hear what Pete Clark and others from Atlanta say about the roads and bicycle commuting in the Atlanta area.

Pete, you can do it! As hunter said, trust the Lord....and your legs! Easy does it, and before you know it you will be looking forward to working overtime so you will have an excuse to ride an extra day!

hmmm...somewhat similar to my situation.
i dont have a car, and my new job is about a 45-50min ride, each way. i was fine with that, but i thought id still use the bus here and there(if im tired, or if its pouring out).
well, right before i started the job the bus option was taken away. a now 105 day transit strike started back then(and is still going, with no end in sight). my options were to cycle in, or quit and find a local job(would have been lower pay).
i went for it, and have succeeded....i cycle virtually every day(i can find i ride maybe 1 out of ten days)....and you know what? im loving it!(for the most part)....im feeling great, i know im getting in better shape....and im saving $35 a month
you can do it pete, just go for it....after a few weeks youll start to really enjoy it(your wallet will too).

Someone found my MARTA pass (and actually turned it in with over two weeks worth of rides left on it)! Chalk one up for my ability to underestimate human goodness...
I'm not sure if I am happy or sad...I guess I'm happy...I can still try the "bike-only" option.
Over the weekend I really got pyched into the idea of going "bus-free." The mere thought of never having to use a motorized contraption gives me a tingle...
It's a real challenge, to be sure.
As for Mike's comments about poor road planning in Atlanta, a map of the area might remind one of a bad case of vericose veins. The good part is that (on my side of town) the main roads into Atlanta from Stone Mountain are not used as much as the freeways by the huge numbers of newer residents. They prefer to find the freeway and stay on it until they get where they are going. I can get to town quite easily and pleasantly, as many of the secondary roads and alternate routes pass through quiet residential areas. Perhaps the majority of drivers don't know these areas yet.
But one day I decided to take North Druid Hills Road, upon which I hadn't travelled lately. I found the most intriguing morass of four-wheelers having a rough time of it. I am glad I could not hear their frustrated comments as I swept by them as if they were standing still...actually, they were standing still. But the thrill of victory aside, I don't think I'll go back there. It reminds me of a singles bar, crowded with people going nowhere, day after day (and smoke-filled, too <cough>).
I love my tree-covered neighborhood lanes.
