Buzzed

This morning I got buzzed by a cop in his squad car! I was on the right of a single lane road, no traffic in the opposite direction. He came within inches of me at about 35-40mph and made no attempt to swerve to give me room. Of all people. . .

I was buzzed by a police car before, on a road with 2 lanes in each direction. I was in the curb lane, next to the curb, and the cop passed by me within inches, when the other lane was wide open. It was the University police, that has the same powers as city police, in police cars with lights, but it said Dept. of Public Safety, really big on the side of the cop car. They didnt make me feel safe.

Half of them don't seem to even know the laws concerning cyclists, so why should this surprise me?

i was driving with my family over thanksgiving, which is something i hadn't done in years. i was surprised at how close they passed cyclists. of course i said something, and they admitted they hadn't ever really given it much thought. i mean, they didn't purposely buzz riders, but they definitely could have moved over a little more.

He might have been multi-tasking (e.g., answering a radio call, checking a license plate on his dashboard computer, etc.).

Is that supposed to make the OP feel safer?

I've called the police for info before. Stuff like, is it my lane, is there an actual curb distance I should be at?, sidewalk riding (which I don't do), passing a line of cars stopped at a red light, etc, etc. They had no answers to give. Most of it has to do with respect for riders and cars alike and understanding how to be safe without being annoying which is a fine line.

Quite simply, I don't think they know and up here we've had alot of incidents lately that they're not sure how to handle. I don't fault them, it's just a fine line.

Stay upright

I second that. At least get the plate number. I've busted cops who were in the wrong.

Well, thus far all my experiences with the police and bicycling have been positive. They always have gone out of their way to protect me as a bicyclist and on at least two occassions, they chased drivers down who either buzzed me or otherwise put me in danger.

In this case, I would give the officer the credit of the doubt and chalk it up to him being on the radio or something.

Be a bicycle ambassador. Pick up a dozen sweet rolls and bicycle them to the local police station. Tell them Merry Christmas from the local bicycle community.

Ewwww. Kissing up to authority, makes my stomach turn. While you're at it, could you send some muffins over to GW? Maybe that will make him stop giving tax breaks to the rich and sending the military to kill people in other countries.

I've almost been doored by a university cop... also almost saw them t-bone a girl on a bike who was riding by the library, which has a wide pedestrian walkway that university vehicles drive through for access. They go through there pretty fast too, it seems dangerous to me.

There us absolutly nothing wrong with rewarding those that protect and serve. Sure, there are the small percentage of officers that are idiots (just like bikers) but MOST are decent people.
I'm not sure that rolls are the best, maybe donuts?
As a past local fire dept chief and EMT I have responded to quite a few road accidents and emergencies where the officers, be it Sheriff, CHP, Ranger, Town Cop, they were with very few exceptions professional and caring.
I LIKE COPS!
I did have one officer tell me that the reason he speeds on the freeway is because he can. This was as we were responding to a call while I was a ride along. :O)
