where to buy a Chainguard?
 

I've search in Nashbar and Performance Bike to no avail. Please point me to the right place.

Wald makes them in a couple different lengths. I ordered one through my LBS. Looked like this:

MegaLowRider.com is a U.S. source of chain guards. They have several variations of the one chocula posted.
Azor produces work bikes for the European market. You may be able to get a full chain case from one of their dealers.
Biria and Electra both sell bikes in the U.S. with chain guards/cases, and you may be able to get a replacement one through their dealers.
In all cases they are going to be a challenge to mount on a frame not designed for them.
The easiest to mount chain guard I've seen is also one of the most elegant, made by Sogreni.

I just bought two and received them promptly from: http://www.permaco.com/.

Look for "Hebie Bicycle Accessories" on their page.

Look for the shark and the dolphin. The picture on the site is shorter than the actual guard :). They are quite good and the Web site is easy to use and all was smooth.

How does the thing work? It looks to me that it only covers the cranks. Is it wide enough to cover most of the exposed chain ?

The crank area is where most of the staining occurs. If you have a front derailleur, the chain shifts and there no chainguard that can literally cover it. These Hebie guards from Persons Majestic are in any case intended to work with guards covering the crank area such as the Chain Disk, in the first place. In my opinion the Chain Disk type guard is more important than the other one. Provided that you get the right size (there are two) of the Chain Disk, it will most likely fit.

Note that the Permaco site also sells Hebie Chainwheel protectors. They provide less coverage than the Chain Disk protector marketed by KoolStop and are less likely to fit an arbitrary crankset. Thus, out of the two, I'd go for the KoolStop.

Thanks so much for this info! I've been avoiding using pants while riding recreationally because a few have gotten some cuts from the chainring. I can't wait to try it out!

I hope that this ring will easily fit a shimano ultegra triple crank :)
