newbie wants advice on bike

well my bike got stolen from my house and i need a new bike to ride to work i dont know much about road bikes and becuase my old bike was a ss mtb but it got stolen and im after something to commute on ride to work and around the city i dont know anything about thease type of bikes roadies and fixed gear bikes and ss road bikes so can someone recomend me a good bike to commute on and which would be better ss or gears and would a surly 1x1 be allrite ?

A: www.sheldonbrown.com Shel is a guru from back east. Read all of his stuff to get a common knowledge of cycling words and concepts.

B: Go to a recreational cycling club meeting, ask who are the commuters and start asking them your questions. What they say will likely be the expensive end of the scale.

C: Use the links on these forums and go to places like Bike Nashber or Performance, look at the sites and talk to the support staff.

D: to really save money go to a decent thrift store like Goodwill or Salvation Army and try some of their bikes out in the parking lot. Comfort matters.

D: If you live on flat ground you do not need gears.

See I got the GMC Denali, it's $150.00. So if it get stolen I can aford to just go get a new Denali.
