4% Ride Bicycles to work

I work for a major US based multinational chemical company. A poll taken out of 3754 responses. 4% ride bikes to work, 5% take public transport, 4% ride motorcycle, 3% work from home, the rest drive cars.

I wonder what city that was in. Because there's about 400 people in my building, and I'm the only one that's ever ridden a bike to work in my building. I see maybe 5 or 6 regular commuters in my area of town, out of untold thousands.

1 out of 6, even though he's not one of the 50% of the crew that have had their DL revoked. Each of them have somebody drop them off and pick them up.

This must be a warm climate. I'd be truly shocked if you could locate 150 bicycles or 150 motorcycles on the premises today.

1 out of 15 here...though in the summer two other folks leave bikes here for morning and lunchtime rides. They've been toying with the idea of splitting their commute between driving and riding, like I do in the winter, so we'll see come summer.

If added up all the bike commuters in our three US facilities comprising of ~1500 people, you'd get 1. If you added in our UK facilities, you'd get one more (guy rides 25 miles each way year round). If you started counting in our facilities in Sweden and China, the numbers start to look a little more respectable.

I think there's 2000 people in our building, and I'm the only one who regularly rides. The most I've ever seen is three which caused a real problem because the bike rack has a two bike capacity.

There are about 4 or 5 of us out of 1000 employees that ride into work, but I'm the only one that rides constantly (except lately due to snow on the MUP, grumble).

The sad thing is this is a university, we have 2000 some students who live on campus and I'd say 80% of them drive cars from the apartments (less then a mile away) over to their class buildings. It's gotten better lately, but dang. I'm commuting 8 miles each way and they cant even walk or bike less then a mile.

1 out of 21 here.....unlike a year ago though, I now occasionally see 3 other commuters....we had a light rain this am, so on my way in, followed the tracks of two different bikes on the road in this morning....never seen these two before...the other 3 commuters are all riding mountain bikes and spend most of their trips on sidewalks...these tracks were road bike tracks (thin tire), and on the road with me....

1 out of 80ish unless you count the kids, then more like 41 out of 1080. Except on cold wet days like today, then it's 1 out of 1080. -wussy little 2nd graders, I told them to invest in some bib tights and a balaclava, but nooooooo, "mommie says I need to wride in da cahrpool." Fairweather commuters make me sick!

Sad part is most of them still ride more expensive bikes than me (private school).

Man, don't tell anyone at work. People will be afraid to even talk to you in fear that they might give up their cars!

I'm assuming this was a poll of workers only at your company, and while 4% may seem small to all of us, I think it's still higher than the national average.

Here's an interesting report I found regarding Bicycle Commuting and Facilities in Major U.S. Cities.

www.ce.umn.edu/~levinson/pa8202/Dill.pdf

Seems we here in Minneapolis are at the top of the charts (on this poll anyway) at 2.63%. We seem to consistantly show up in the top three, which makes me feel a bit of civic pride, as it's -8 F today.

As far as my company goes we have 3 out of 21 year round bike commuters and that number grows to about 6 of 21 that are part year (fair weather) riders. And no, we are not hiring.

4% is not bad at all, given it's in the U.S. and all.

Thats pretty much the same situation as me. During the summer theres about 4-5 bikes locked up and in the winter its only ever little old me. I doubt its any better at our other offices.

Luckily my office is in the same building as the major commuter train/subway station, so people have an easy alternative to driving.

My current job is working for a very large bank, and nobody rides. One of my previous jobs was working for an NGO that does environmental and urban sprawl 'watchdog' style work, and I think over half of us commuted in on bikes. It was a small office though. I wanna get out of this damn banker atmosphere.

One out of 750 here. There are 2 others that have expressed an interest, one of which actually did ride in I think 2 times.
FWIW, I live in the motor city corner of the state.

Yep, my bad. Didn't look where the OP lived; just assumed it was U.S. since that's where most people on BF are from. Shame on me.

Still, I guess, it's North America.
