Fenders

Hi,
I want to get some fenders. Any recommendations? I have a Surly LHT commuter, and it has eyelets for fenders, if that helps.

Ones I'm aware of are the SKS Full P35 Fender Set and the Planet Bike HC Freddy Fender set.

I use the SKS P45's fenders on my LHT and they work great.

Avoid the Zefals, the struts don't attach to the fenders very well. The Planet Bike fenders are okay but they are very plasticky (is that a word?). I think the SKS fenders are pretty cool for the money. The Honjo fenders are pricey but they have the 'WOW!' factor. The Giles Bertroud fenders also look great but I have no experience with them.

You can see the Zefals on my Centurion and the Planet Bikes on my Cross-check.

I have SKS and they work.
The front fender broke after about 3 years and several thousand miles, replaced it and continue to ride dry and happy :)

Hey, nice CC. The yellow fenders look great on the black bike.

But nothing is so elegant as black on black. I like my Freddy Fenders.

Thanks! But actually the bike is a dark green. I might switch over to black SKS fenders but right now the yellow gives it a nice contrast.

I got a good deal on Freddy Fenders at REI -- a few bucks cheaper than Planet Bike anyway. So far so good, but we've not had much rain in SoCal this year :(

I've been riding Zefals for 2 years with no probs.
They work great, just make long mudflap for the front.

Yeah, the old Zefals are fine. I have a pair of those as well. I mean the newer ones with the weird clamps at the end of the strut to attach to the fender. The old ones were more like the SKS mounts.

I am very happy with my Freddy Hardcores. I haven't used any of the others so I can't compare, but the Hardcores do everything I expect of them.

My sks fenders have survived at least a couple years, a few wipeouts, and even a raccoon attack. When stressed, they pop out. When not stressed, the stay in. When they pop out, they are easy to pop back in. I am very satisfied.

I have both. They are both pretty good. I think the Freddy's were just a teeny bit easier to install, but the SKS is better material and break away supports. The Freddy's mud flap seems to be more for asthetics than practical reasons. If the price is the same I'd get the SKS and zip tie a big ole mud flap made out of rubber stair mat to it.

I just installed some Bontragers.
I asked the LBS for cheap......and thats what I got
Hardware, OK, fender plastic..........Dont sneeze near them !!

I have two sets of SKS. They are rock solid and only a few bucks more than the all-plastic cheaper stuff. I've heard the Honjos are a total ***** to mount, and the chrome Berthouds seem heavy and would probably look crappy once they're no longer shiny.

I have a "Headlands" Removeable rear fender similar to this one.
I like it because you can take it on and off by hand in 30 seconds. It's also a little longer than most, which keeps off even more rain off your ass.

I've got a set of SKS on my Surly Cross-Check. Work great! Easy to install. I have the bike set for commuting, early morning rides (dark!) and for foul weather riding.

I have a pair of the Planet Bike Freddy Fenders Hardcore on each of my two bikes and have nothing but good things to say about them. :)

I've used SKS Chromoplasts and Commuters and both standard and Hardcore Freddys. All are well-made quality components. If you're running disc brakes or some weird setup, get the ones that will mount with the least trouble. Since your LHT has rim brakes and clearance, get whichever model you can afford that you think looks good.
