Just bought Studs
So I finally had to cave, after riding thru death yesterday morning, and being talked into a ride home yesterday evening I went over to the LBS and bought a pair of studded tires, WOW!!!! what a difference in control. So worth it, and maybe now I can go back to the bike paths instead of the 4+ lane roads for the rest of the winter commute.

Studs for everyone!
Yeah. I smartened up this year and added a set of studded snow tires. What a difference? My hips appreciate the change!

I knew the other night that you weren't too far from becoming a convert when you were checking out mine. I think you'll find the conditions on the MUPs will require a wider tire than what fits on our bikes.

I think I've worn down my rear studs enough that I need to swap them with the front. I just can't get enough traction back there some days...

How many miles do a set of studded tires typically last? What's a decent price?

If they're steel studs, you can get them in the 35-65 range at your LBS, if you get carbide studs, your looking at an extra 30+ above the steel price, but they shouldn't wear out on you any time soon. At least thats my understanding.
Another thing to consider is if your going to be mainly pavement, the steel will wear down quicker than mainly snow/ice.

If you are worried about hitting the ice, you will be better off with studs in the front.

How much do you ride them on pavement? Are they very worn? Think you'll get another 2,500 miles out of them?

I just did my first commute on a fixed gear bike with studded tires (Nokian w240s) today and it was great. Aside from the places where snow would be piled up at corners, I had absolutely no problems keeping both feet on the pedals at all times on my ride in.
The ride out was a little different. Deep ice ruts are even hard with plenty of studs.

So after riding the studs for 1 1/2 days, WOW. They rock hardcore. And in bad conditions, you don't really notice the extra effort needed to push them, because your going in a straight line instead of slipping everywhere.

Thanks Paul. Great to hear.
Gave them their first real run in ice this morning. I'll post pictures in a different thread tonight.

Studs (and a shiny new wheel to mount 'em on) are on my list for next year's riding season. I plan to just swap wheels when the weather and road conditions warrant it.

I considered that, but I didn't want to purchase a new cassette for my rear wheel, although I've never even priced them so maybe it's not that bad.
