Disc brake road bikes and frames
To go along with my fork list, I'm compiling a list of road frames, bike and builders. I am intentionally excluding flatbar-only bikes.

The Cannondale has eyelets at the rear dropouts, but no rack mounts on the upper seat stays. See the picture below.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5...e%20rear.6.jpg Edit: Also look at the Lemond Poprad disc frame. |
The Gunnar Cross Hairs is available with disc brake mounts on the chain stay, leaving room for eyelets/rack mounts. $750 frame only and maybe extra for disc brake dropout.
|
Oh, and the Lemond Poprad disc - $1500 complete.

Vanilla sure has some pretty bikes too, if you're willing to sell a few vital organs and wait a couple of years for your frame:

Check www.brodiebikes.com, loox for the Romax and the Ronin
also Devinci www.devinci.com for innovative caliper placement |
Schwinn DBX also has disc brakes:
http://www.schwinnbike.com/images/ca...RLDDBX_RED.jpg Redline used to make the Conquest Disc R,but dropped them in '06 I believe. |
Redline Conquest. 2007 model has disc tabs.
http://www.redlinebicycles.com/adult...onquest-lg.jpg I have a 2004 Conquest Disc-R frame I'm building up. It has 130mm rear spacing. Disc and 130 spacing are not a good combo. Had I known how much hassle I would be in for I probably would have passed on the frame. Look for 135mm if you're thinking of building from a frame! All of the available commercial wheelsets I found in 130 has stupid low spoke counts and were very expensive. Phil Wood and Chris King do 130 disc hubs, but they ain't cheap. The most cost effective hubs I found were these Novatecs, but still not cheap when you consider the cost of building up wheels. Thankfully I managed to score a rear wheel from a Specialized Sirrus Sport on ebay with 130 spacing and a 6 bolt disc mount. It was $44 shipped so if I have to rebuild it I will not be too sad. Oh, and Surly, please make a disc-friendly Cross Check frame. You will make a zillion dollars. Sliding dropouts please. |

More likely, if I'm spending that kind of money it'll be on Ti. I love the bikes of the nice steel builders, but I'm not a huge lug fan and the larger Ti builders seem to have quicker turnaround. -------- Thanks for the help guys. I'll get everything added to the first post, just for ease of reading. |

brand: Giant
model: OCR Touring frame/bike: complete bike price: $1300 (?) website: formerly in Giant archives, gone now. material: aluminum, steel fork rack mounts: yes eyelets: yes rear brake location: seatstay tire clearance: 32s are no problem with fenders Currently Available?: NO Was made in 2003-2004, I think. I have one and it rocks! |
Sorry to bump up an old thread, but there's a bike I found a long while ago that wasn't mentioned here:
Novara Element, from REI: http://tinyurl.com/3b362f (I used tinyurl.com because the original url was really really long) It's a disc brake equipped cyclocross bike with Tektro cross-top levers for people that like riding the top/flat part of the drops. I like the specs, except for the fork (I assume it's aluminum) and the front derailleur (looks to be below Shimano Sora level). Still, the gearing sure is nice...low enough for me to climb most hills unloaded :) Mostly, I just like cyclocross-type bikes for commuting; the LeMond Poprad and Redline Conquest were mentioned here, but not the REI bike. |

Very cool, Slvoid. If they still made these, I'd own one by now.

Sorry to bump this thread up again, but the Schwinn DBX listing is the 2006 model.
Here's the 2007 model: http://schwinnbike.com/products/bikes_detail.php?id=748 http://schwinnbike.com/images/catalo...RLDDBX_RED.jpg As you can see, the 2007 model is better for commuting, because: 1) It already comes with fenders 2) The rear disc brake is mounted inside the chainstay. That means it's easier to mount a rear rack to it. |
Thx...
I ran into a problem with this thread... I hit the board imposed picture limit in the first post so I couldn't easily keep adding bikes. I'm going to eventually just put them on a website that can be linked to from here or other threads, since I think there's a decent, and probably growing, interest in this segment of bikes here. The Schwinn looks nice. I would rather have seen it released with 105 levers instead of tiagra, but this lets it come in considerably cheaper than something like the Portland. Probably won't hold resale as well, but a nice bike nonetheless. |
Okay, thanks Jeff. I'm moving to an area that's notorious for constant rain and wet weather, and I don't like mountain bikes or hybrids for on-road riding, so I'd appreciate it if you can keep this thing going.
|
Since there's a couple cx bikes in this list, the Bianchi Roger (SS, CX, Disc Brakes) fits the bill as well. It's pretty sweet but very pricey.
I'm thinking for my next bike, a San Jose, and swapping out the front fork for a Kona P2 disc fork and a disc brake, for a nice, singlespeed bad weather commuter. Some guy on the MTBR forums did the same and it looks sweet. |
