Tail light with threaded mount.
 

I am looking for a good tail light with a threaded mount that i can use on my rear rack bracket. It doesn't look like the Planet bike superflash has one. I know the LD1000 doesn't because i own one. I've been using Xenon lightman strobes for years, but am finally giving up on them, because they fail at an alarming rate.

I just bought a new one to replace a defective one, and it was DOA. Thanks for any tips.

The Topeak Redlight comes with a mounting kit for attaching to Topeak racks...don't know if it will fit others, though...

Make sure you get the battery powered versions and not the dynamo versions.

If you take the clip off of the LD1000, there is a pin mount and screw hole behind it. At least there was on mine. I have one mounted to the back of a rack currently.

There are no threads like there are on my Lightman strobes. I just used a threaded bolt and screwed into the plastic threaded housing. I'm hoping i can move this 1000 to the bracket and put a superflash on my trunk bag via the belt clip.

anything with a CSPC approved reflector (and many that don't) shoud mount on a standard reflector bracket so they should be compatable with your rack. My CatEye (can't remember model number) with the CSPC reflector has that style mount and so does the Blackburn Mars 2.0

You have to thread a screw into the back of the plastic (it comes with the LD1000 and is a bit too long). The upper pin holds the light to the bracket. Here's mine on the bike

I'm a bit of a "belt and suspenders" guy, which is a good thing considering the potholes we have.

For some TL-LD1000, I designed a bracket by sawing and filing bits off a 2" x 2" x 6" aluminium angle bracket. I was able to screw the TL-LD1000 the same way Cyccommute did. Then, I added one zip tie on each side of the attachment point (between each vertical row of lights), around the light and metal bracket.

The Planet Bike Superflash can be installed in a fairly similar fashion. If you remove its bracket, it has a clip that looks a bit like a ball-point clip. Since there is some room left in the casing itself, I have clipped two Superflashes on my daughter's bike, then I drilled tiny holes through the casing, metal bracket and clip, then I used a tiny #4 or #6 bolt to secure the light in place.

Alternate way. The Superflash also comes with a seatpost collar and a much smaller seatstay clamp. If you cut the rubber shims to double them up, the seatstay clamp fits quite well around the legs of a typical rear rack (Blackburn, Axiom...). It's not the ideal solution if you ride in the snow (light gets dirty very quickly) or if you have panniers, but it would work fine with a rack trunk or other stuff on the rack.

Ain't digital cameras great;) I wouldn't use one for real pictures...I still like silver for that.

I just used a short peace of PVC plumbing pipe and fender washers through my rack reflector mount as shown in the picture.

If you look closely you will notice the pipe is cut at an angle corresponding to the angle of a standard seat tube. This allows the blinkie to be aimed properly as the indentations in the clamp would not allow any angle to be selected. I have over 4,000 miles on this blinkie setup with no problems with the mount or blinkie. BTW that’s a cheap BELL blinkie from Wal-mart that’s too cheap for a thief to bother with.

It is safe to drill a pilot hole through the back of the LD1000 into the battery compartment (remember to remove the batteries). I believe I used the next larger size drill bit over the 1/8." Anyway, you will not hit any electronics or components in the modification and allows the use of a full length reflector screw for added strength.

Using washers will allow you to use any length screw you want without drilling.

The screw hole on the light is actually threaded, but you can't see it without a bright light. It is a tight interference fit to lock the screw in place.

The Cateye TL-LD500. It has a threaded hole in the back for this purpose.
It has an integrated reflector as well.
I have it screwed to my rack at all times.

I do have the Superflash as well though.

You miss the point; by drilling the existing hole deeper you are able to more deeply seat the screw and create a stronger mount. If you are only using the 1/8" deep hole as it comes stock, then a good whack is all that it would take to tear it right off the back of the rack.

if your seatpost is longer than it needs to be you can just cut the bottom of it off, drill a hole and mount it to the rack. otherwise the blackburn mars 2.0, as already mentioned, mounts quickly and painlessly to a reflector bracket.

but, you need to use a longer screw or a thin reflector bracket. Luckily I have a nice steel bracket off a cheap throwaway bike that worked perfect for attatching it to my "crate"
