Prankster Payback
 

Where I work I am able to bring my bike indoors. Well, I work in IT and on our loading dock we have a place known as the "cage." It's a fence enclosed and badge access controlled area for servers and my commuter bike. There's a prankster on one of the other IT teams who has put my bike on top of the cage, moved the bike to another cage I don't have access to, and even called one of his security buds to remove my badge access for a day.

So, payback is a beeyatch right? On my way out last night I ride up to his Jeep to deflate one of his front tires and put a POS bicycle pump on the hood.

He spent some quality time pumping it I hear. We now have a truce. :D

I would have done the same but not left the tire pump. He did not leave you a way out did he?

That would have been more cruel (and perhaps warrented), but the bike pump was a very artistic touch. It was extra demeaning because it prescribed a specific course-of-action the guy had to take, a course that would make him look a bit like a fool, and give him the experience of pumping up a tire... I think it was brilliantly played.

Had I the tact and grace to go the route you did, I'd have left a mini frame-pump.

Given my actual lack of tact and grace, I'd have taken my stem puller and left him with a 4 flats and a bag of valve-stems taped to his window.

That is hilarious!!! The irony of the flat tire with the bicycle pump is just great. What I'd have been tempted to do, had I thought the same thoughts as you, is remove the valve stem and *hide* it in one of the places where he hid your bike. That way when he pumps it up the first time he gets it all up to pressure and then takes the pump off and PSSSSSSSsssssssssssssssssss there goes all his air.

Have you ever thought about going into the Revenge business?

Hopefully it was a high volume (vs. high pressure) floor pump.
I once in a pinch pumped my car tire from 15 to 25psi with a floor pump - it took exceedingly long, overheated the pump and gave me very sore arms. I'd say inflating a car tire with a portable bike pump would be nearly impossible.

Hey, we all got a good laugh about it here at work! He knew he had it coming and took his medicine without getting his skirt ruffled. Another idea I toyed with was to heist his keys for a few minutes and drive it up through a snowbank on the other side of the parking lot, you know, like they do in the 4x4 commercials?

The pump was a real piece of work too, about 15 years old and not much volume or pressure going through it. I'm surprised the hose or valve didn't crack. He spent 20 minutes getting enough pressure in the tire and topped it off at the gas station.

He won't mess with my bike anymore.:)

As one who works in IT and has played (and been victim of) many pranks, I can tell you that for the most part, all IT guys play pranks and take pranks pretty well.

That said, Zipster better be prepared for what's next. For real. That was a doozie and it'll probably take him a while to figure out how to one-up you.

The fact that you left the pump is the real touch of class that makes this prank funny while remaining judiciously tasteful and good-natured.

Heh, I had to do that once, from a complete flat. With a Topeak Joe Blow it took about 10 minutes to inflate that freaking tire...

I worked at an employer where one of the shop guys decided to screw with my bike. He would come into the office & loosen the seat, the brakes, the front wheel, one time he took the front & seat. Everytime it happened I had to go track down where he put it. He had to come into the office where it was at & hide it from me. This was interupting my work & his. I never went to my mgr but he got involved & made it clear this was to stop. It didn't, the last time he took the whole bike. I found it & filed a Code of Conduct violation against him based on theft of personal property. He was suspended for a week with out pay & was warned the next time he would lose his job. I wanted him fired not suspended. This guy was a 20+ year employee at that company, he should have known better. After that no one would go near my bike.

Bottom line you mess with my bike I will take action against you for it.
