we actually ended up with gusts as high as 51 mph. and remember that this is with temps in the teens and low 20's. although, i have to say, my dual windbreaker set up actually does a good job in reducing the affects of the wind.

Maybe I got heavier but I was hit by some 50mph gusts from the side and I didn't get knocked to the other side of the road, just ended up leaning into it and holding my line...

nice pic

Man, today was about the worst commute I've had all year. My fingers absolutely froze. It's really weird, a few weeks ago I rode in when it was a good 20 degrees colder, but now for some reason I actually had to stop and suck my fingers because I was afraid of losing them. I guess I need hardcore windproof bicycle-specific lobster mits. I'm going to go with the LG magma gloves on nashbar returned items. This will be like, my 5th pair of gloves! Although, as soon as they come it it will be 60 degrees, of course. I can barely type right now, though, so I need them.

EDIT - damn! I had them in my cart and someone else must have bought them in the time it took me to check out. Any recommendations for the absolute hottest gloves?

Neezy: Sorry to hear you're frozen, but I'm happy to have you as my advance guard. I'll definitely cram the glove "liners" under the ski gloves. And how about the Manhattan Bridge? Any ice I need to know about?

On there bridge there's no ice anymore, it must have been salted good at some point yesterday, so there's only a bit of light snow at the very top of the bridge.

I'm still looking for the ultimate cold weather gloves.

Ice isn't really a factor on the Bridge now. Now if I can just get rid of all of this salt....

Commute fine. Hands warm with the extra layer of gloves. You had me worried there. But when I went out, I felt like whichever knight it was in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" who gets terrified of entering the cave guarded . . . by a rabbit.

"What, behind the rabbit?"
"It is the rabbit."

I was afraid I was being over confident and kept waiting for the deadly assault, but it didn't come. (Though the bridge was a little iffy.)
As for the gloves, forget it! Go to Modells or wherever and buy a pair of running gloves or just a pair of cotton thingies on the street. Wait till July to buy the Lobster gloves. I'll join in. We'll do it in bulk.

I'm glad you had a good commute, I think I must have a circulation problem which is complicating the issue. As you said, it wasn't terribly cold out there, but boy what a disaster for me this morning!

When you say wait till July, you mean because there will be some hefty discounts on hardcore winter gear? I'm all about that.

BTW, what part of brooklyn are you in? I'm at Washington and Gates in Clinton Hill. I bike to Chelsea, it's a pretty short ride.

1. When I say July, I'm just guessing. The big sales on winter stuff probably will come pretty soon, actually. I'm sure Nashbar doesn't have an infinte amount of warehouse space. But it does go against all my instant-gratification impulses to buy winter booties just as the winter is over. (On the other hand, it does please the cheap-ass Scot in me....)
2. I ride from Park Slope to Times Square.
Hey -- any idea how to get to the Williamsburg Bridge without riding under the BQE? I'd like to avoid Flushing and Bedford, if I can. I don't mind the extra miles. Just looking for the scenic route on those rare days when I wake up early.

The pearl izumi amphib gloves are hot as hell. My gf has em, they're very warm, too warm.
I have a pair of louis garneau techno gloves, they're just right around 15-20 degrees if I'm active, 25 degrees if I'm riding slowly.

Lately down to 20 degrees, I use a pair of long finger summer gloves with a pair of cheap wool gloves with the thumb, index, and middle finger tips chopped off. I get insulation plus dexterity.

I'm on Garfield and Sixth. But like I say, I don't mind the scenic route. What I most dislike is the industrial traffic on Flushing (and the ripped up roads).
The route I had before was taking Fifth Ave. over to Fort Greene, following Adelphi (or whatever runs north) to Flushing, taking that to Bedford. Any ideas?

Try Willoughby or Lafayette instead of Flushing. Make a left on Bedford.
