battery storage

DIY brigade:

I probably won't be using my headlight super often.

what is the best idea for storing my NiMh 12 c-cell pack:

fully charged?
fully drained?
somewhat drained?

I know about the self-discharge, but I thought maybe there would be a proper way to ensure the batteries stay happy.

My understanding is that the charge state does not matter. There is some benefit to storing them in the refridgerator. Here is a good source of information on NiMH batteries, although it is for RC airplanes, not bikes. www.rcbatteryclinic.com

From what I've read: I'd go with fully charged in the refrigerator, preferably in a closed container. Of course, you'll have to let them warm up a bit before they'll give you much juice.

Charged.

Charged, refrigerator. If a cell (I'm talking NiMH here) drops below 0.95 volts per cell, you start to get crystallization of the electrolyte around the cathode. This causes an irreversible drop in capacity of the cell.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to set an alarm for July or so to remember to pull it out and top off the charge, then do it again when you pull it out in the fall to use it again.

Here's another site that just chock full of information. I noticed that everyone says to store them in a refrigerator which is good. Don't store them in the freezer, that can be bad.
