Redline Signature, internal hub?
I recently picked up a 24 inch Redline Signature in great condition (except tires). It was mainly for my brother, but the moron doesn't want to use it. Too spoiled on hitchin' rides from friends/family.
Anyway . . . I've been riding a modded '98 Stumpjumper for commuting about six miles RT. It does the job, but I kind of like the way the Redline rides. I'm thinking about slapping a Nexus 7/8 speed internal hub into the wheel so that I can have options available. I've got a couple of small hills where the better gearing would help.
It would kind of keep the look of the bike still intact without marring it with a regular cassette. I'm not gonna be taking "any sweet jumps" with it but I will be jumping a few curbs here and there.
Any opinions?

Man, I wish I know more Napo-leon quotes.
Anyway, I did speak with my LBS owner this evening and he said it'd be possible. But only if the frame were cromoly. Luckily, it is 4130!
Now I just gotta decide how many gears I wanna get for it. 3/4/7/8? Well, I'm gettin' excited about it!

. . . almost there . . .
So last night I was cruising the Criagslist bike section and I see that somebody has a couple of cruiser for sale. I check out the details and one of them happens to be a three-speed. Usually when I hear three-speed, I'm thinkin' internal hub.
So this morning I head on over to the guys house after e-mailing him to check out the bikes. When I get there, he only has one of the bikes left. Luckily for me, it happens to be an Electra three-speed cruiser, internal! She's a frickin' tank, and a bit rusty.
I check out the gearing to see if she still works. Sho'nuff, everything's in working order. To tell the truth, it was a steal at $20!!! There was no way I was gonna haggle.
He even wanted me to take the helmets from him.
They were a bit old.
The foam didn't bounce back.
Kinda' gross.
But I gladly took the bike. My Redline Franken-muter is almost ready to be put together. I'm just waiting on the Maxxis Hookworms to arrive and to rebuild the rear wheel with the three-speed Nexus!
Woo-hoo

Is the Redline some kind of overgrown BMX bike or something? From your description that's what it sounds like. This sounds like a cool project. Post pics when completed.

I'm really getting into this whole biking to work thing. It's fun! The endorphines are still kickin' once you get to work and it's a great way to start a shift!

Well, here she is. She came out a little more Santa Cruz-ey style than I was expecting. But at least now I can fit in whenever I head on down to Pacific Avenue.
Pretty Shweet, don'cha tink!

That rear wheel was a real bit*h! Have you ever tried to spread cromoly. You need a LOT of leverage. And I'm still not done! I've gotta figure out a way to make the stays parallel. That wheel isn't moving though.
I took her out for a spin last night. She really is a comfortable ride. Responds really well! I can actually ride her hands free. Those Hookworms are sweet, too. I took a real sharp turn for the hell of it and you just feel the 'worms grip the road. Nice.
It's been a long time since I've had this much fun on a bike. I look forward to many rides in the future.
Now I just need a banana seat . . .

I had recently purchased a pair of specialized something-or-others that were 24" x 1.95" with a max of 80psi. The ride was definately a bit faster, but it was also harsher. I cut those damned things off (not really) and put my precious 'worms back on.
I have the 'worms at 70psi and they still ride great! They eat the rough spots, not as well as real suspension, but for what I'm doing they're fine.
The apes allow me to have a comfort-bike ride (ie, not leaning over). I need to get rid of the gut before I get something more appropriate for real commuting. I take it out almost everyday, and have a good 15 mile ride RT about once a week. It's great!!!
