Like a new bike!

I once remarked here that my greatest joy (since becoming a bike commuter) is the first ride after slipping on a new chain. Well this weekend I gave my bike it's first completely new drive train. New bb, crankset, chain, and freewheel. The only thing I didn't replace were the pedals.

It rides like buuuuuuuuddderr! So smooth. Silent like a ninja!!

Best ride in EVER this morning.

If you haven't done your spring overhaul, I suggest it, it will restore your love for your ride.

Oooh, new bb and crankset too. I have the new cassette and chain sitting in the shop, but I'm waiting for the rain to stop. So, July sometime.

$$$, going to cost more than just cleaning it (and a new chain).

How bad does your drive train get!

I agree!!! Just had a new chainring , crankset, bottom bracket, chain and deraileur installed on my Giant Halfway folder. I am loving it shifts great, bottom bracket issmooth and gear ratio is better. Bike is faster and feels better than new.

Three years of year round commuting. Thick salt and sand for 3-4 months, and a flooded MUP a few times a year. It was pretty bad. The crankset wasn't necessarily toast, but the bottom bracket was, and it was an strange size, so it was just easier to get a new crankset that used a more common sized bb.

+1 for the spring overhaul. Just had new cassette, rear mech, chain and cables, will also get a new bb and chainset as they are quite cheap at the moment (£50 LX chainset and bb compared to £60 for my new XTR rear mech). Also got a new Park chain cleaner and 3 differnet chain lubes.

It sounds like a lot but I would rather spend £200 each year for a whole new drivetrain than pay £350 a year insurance on a car or £500 every year for a new bike. And I will definately get more than a year out of my XTR mechs, probably around 3-5 years which makes it even better value.
